Was in a grocery store today in Northern Arkansas and noticed a store employee stocking shelves. On his shirt was fastened a campaign style button that proclaimed "I support Israel." Being on a first name basis with this fellow I couldn't control my curiosity and asked what the significance of the button was. He said the United States is really screwing up by not supporting the country of Israel. I asked if the billions we already give them was not enough. He said the Obama administration has turned their back on the little country that likes to keep the shite stirred up. Of course I disagreed and said they were lucky to even have a country. He said biblical prophecy predicted this abandonment and that it was a sign of the times. I told him I could think of better things to do with our taxpayer dollars.

It is surprising that Gentiles in Northern Arkansas would don buttons professing their allegiance to a small country controlled by Judaism and Islam.

Retard. Why the hell do Americans think they're the world police anyway?

Maybe the store guy would like to listen to this guy. Then again maybe not.

In addition to the Christian and Jewish zealots, there is also a lot of money involved, and there are geo-political issues at stake.  A huge chunk of US aid to Israel is kicked back to US defense industries.  The zealots win, the military-industrial-complex wins, and the US can use Israel as a forward base in the Middle East for purposes of natural resource control.  Unfortunately, everybody else loses.

@ Ed - I'm not surprised. Back in the 70's when I was a member of a Christian church, Israel was always spoken about in glowing terms though I never really comprehended why, other than somehow the existence of the country is what God wanted since Jewish people were his favorite for some  unknown reason, and it had something to do with ushering in the second coming which the sooner the better as far as most Christians were concerned even though they believed a Jewish person would not go to heaven if they did not believe in Jesus. O_o

As far as do I support Israel, I have not decided.

"We can avoid death, but only because two-thirds of the Jews of Israel will inevitably die in a future holocaust. America must therefore support the nation of Israel in order to keep the Israelis alive until after the Rapture."

Fundamentalist Christians see the state of Israel playing a huge role in the end times. They don't love the Jews. They think there will be another holocaust and, of course, the Jews will be doing the backstroke in a sea of lava once Jesus returns in pissed off mode. Meanwhile the faithful Christians will be rising up into the sky (the rapture) where Jesus will be handing out space suits in preparation for taking them to Heaven, which fundamentalists believe is a physical world for physical humans, not a spiritual place where souls float around.

The core problem with trying to teach 10 year olds, or anyone else evolution is that VERY few people truly understand it.  They THINK they do, but I have yet to meet any such person.

When I talk evolution with people of any age I simply lay out the mountain of virtually irrefutable evidence and the unassailable logic.  As I point out: evolution happened!  Evolution always has happened!  Evolution WILL always happen!  Evolution MUST happen!  And evolution can’t NOT happen any more than a ball can be thrown into the air and remain suspended in violation of the Theory of Gravitation.  In my experience, children GET that!

That's why no church would ever allow me to explain evolution in its Sunday school classes. But Christian fundamentalists are doing everything in their power to force public schools to teach their superstitious nonsense.
