My grandmother, bless her tiny, uneducated, bigoted, soul, once told me that the most terrible (pronounced ter
- ible) thing she ever saw was the death of an atheist. My grandparents had a friend who was an atheist. When he was dying, in the hospital, they went and spent his last hours on earth, trying to save his soul from damnation in hell. They prayed, admonished, begged, pleaded, and cajoled him to accept Jesus Christ as his savior and lord. And I have always thought about this poor guy, laying there dying, with his friends making his last few hours on earth, a living hell, and I thought: Yes, indeed, it was a terrible thing.

A small part of my hope for humanity died in the reading of that. It truly is a terrible thing. I could only imagine actually HEARING it.

Considering how few people bothered to visit me when I was in the hospital after having an appendectomy back in '04, in a similar situation I don't think I'd have to be too concerned. But yeah, horrible assumption on behalf of your grandparents that their so-called "friend", in his dying moments, would somehow be comforted by their prayers and pleading to accept jeebus and be "saved". Bet it never occurred to them that what they did was actually quite uncaring and selfish as they were only considering their own beliefs and not respecting his own lack of belief. I'm certain after all that he happily welcomed his final breath.

That's an awful way to spend your last fews hours, being badgered to death.

Spending my final moments of consciousness being hounded by religious zealots is one of my greatest fears.

Oh my fucking GAWD! I had never considered this horrible fate. Oh wow, that's just... NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Hmph, well... If my family should try that, I'll be spending my last few hours of life pissing off and HIGHLY OFFENDING everyone in the room. They do that shit to me, I swear to FSM, I will go on a fucking tirade that would make Christopher Hitchens proud!

Selfish, ignorant bastards. How could they possibly do that to him during his last few hours?!

I have written in my will thath there is to be NO religiosity involved around my death, if I die in hospital, no last rights, no mention of god or jesus or any religious icon at my funeral.

Wow... that is quite disturbing that they could not respect their loved one even in his last moments of life. Very sad... I think we all should consider adopting Martin's idea. I don't think my family would ever do that to me, but I would rather take precautionary measures than have my last moments on earth spoiled like that.

A few years ago a friend of mine died from skin cancer. She was an atheist and when we saw each other we reconfirmed our lack of belief.

I went to her funeral. Not only was it held at a CHURCH (against her wishes), but the stupid "pastor" leading the service said that my friend had a death bed CONVERSION to christianity and she was now in "heaven" with "jesus". OMG... he went on and on and on about "this man called jesus"... until I wanted to puke. I had to get up and leave.

It pissed me off! I'm planning to finalize plans and make sure there are no religious icons of any kind surrounding my death or any celebrations of life afterward. NONE.
