Damon Fowler, a high school senior at Bastrop High School in Louisiana, is being called an Atheist Hero in many forums and blogs this morning. Damon called for his school not to use a Christian prayer during their graduation ceremony, citing Louisiana law. Due to a threat of the ACLU, the school district decided to remove the prayer from their graduation program...but things only got worse for Damon. He has received death threats from other students, been slandered by his teacher, and has been cut off from communicating with his own mother. Even through all of this, Damon continued to stand up for the rights of the non-religious & the non-Christians! I am so proud of the young man and I am happy to have this intelligent young man on our side!
Hemant @ friendlyathiest.com wrote an exceptional blog on Damon and it is complete with links to Damon's original Reddit post, links to other blogs, as well as a video of the graduation rehearsal.
I commend this young man and now that the ACLU is involved, we should see some legal proceedings come out of this.
On a side note: His graduation is today. I'm eager to see if the school upheld their decision to leave the Christian prayer out of the ceremony or if these ignorant students decided to take the law in their own measly hands.
