Christian Conservatism Offended by Penis

Conservative Christians are offended by lots of things: liberals, atheists, Harry Potter, Muslims, Jews, but they seem to be offended most by the human body, the penis in particular.

"Forget trying to maneuver your way through all the mixed reactions to Watchmen crowding the interweb today. There’s only one question you need to answer, apparently, in order to make up your mind whether or not to see the highly anticipated adaptation: are you okay with a massive blue penis in an R-rated comic book movie, or will you be offended and demand an apology from the MPAA? Over at the site Movieguide, which is partnered with The Christian Film & Television Commission, organization chairman and “spokesmen” (is he multiple people?) Dr. Ted Baehr is quoted as saying Watchmen should have received an NC-17 rating for its constant display of male anatomy, and he claims the MPAA has agreed to bring the complaint to their ratings board."

If you have no idea what’s going on, a movie adaptation of a short comic series, Watchmen, features a character with an often exposed penis. The filmmakers did not include the glowing blue member for pure shock value or to make conservatives uncomfortable. It’s in the comics, and for good reason. The penis is never featured in an obscene manner, but rather “as is”, revealing Manhattan’s distance and disconnection from humanity and our conventions. In fact, artist Dave Gibbons says this about drawing Dr. Manhattan:

We were very careful about the way we introduced the nudity, though; it didn't happen in the bedroom scene but while the good Doctor was alone in the desert. I was careful to give him understated genitals, like a piece of classical sculpture, too. I'm sure some people didn't even notice he WAS nude for a page or two and by then, it was too late! If I were portraying Dr. Manhattan, I’d be offended that someone took offense to my body.

But all nudity is not equal in the eyes of Christianity. Rarely, if ever, do I read about conservative Christians rallying for NC-17 ratings for movies featuring breasts, even when they share the same time or more on the big screen as a penis.

But why attack the penis? Apparently the Christian Film & Television Commission is fine with all the violence and foul language in Watchmen, but they just can’t stand looking at a big blue dick.

I wonder how these people shower and dress without suing themselves.

I wish for once someone would take my advice - Grow up!

repeat our mantra..."you do not have a right to be not offended...you do not have a right to be not offended...you do not have a right to be not offended...you do not have a right to be not offended...you do not have a right to be not offended...you do not have a right to be not offended..."

I had a humorous experience at work regarding this... One of the ladies I work with went to see it with her husband on opening day; she came in to work Monday morning professing "Don't take your kids to see Watchmen" to the entire office. When people queried her response was that "More than half the movie is shots of a big blue penis."

When I told her that its that way in the comic too she was aghast. When I explained that it symbolized one of the many ways that Dr. Manhattan was disconnected from humanity, she shrugged it off and said "But they didn't have to keep showing it for the whole movie."

She's not quite as bad as The Christian Film & Television Commission obviously, but she was quite adamant that it was not appropriate for children. Although I did not push the subject with her, my inner thought was "Well no shit! The movie is rated R."

On a side note tangent, I find it irritating the recent occasional outcry from parents who have the nerve to take their kids to a rated-R movie, then complain about the violence, language, or nudity in the movie. You just took your kids to a rated-R movie, what did you expect?

Thank you! And the fact that you were able to get into an R rated movie probably means you're an adult yourself. I wish people would act like it.

I'm sure that they are offended every time they take a shower.

HAHA! They blurred it out here in Thailand! And blurred a few of the more violent bits. (Not the entire screen, just little blurbs of exact points)

~I missed the penis......:(

LOL but they weren't offended by the vivid sex scene in the space ship thing? Dr. Manhattan was the best character in the movie (penis or no penis), what a shame.

Really? The big, blue penis? That's what offended people in Watchmen? Personally, I loved the film, but if I had to pick something to be offended by it would probably be The Comedian shooting a pregnant woman or the dogs fighting over the remains of a child.
