Catholic church offends and disgusts me (news article response)

Hi All,

I checked the news on this morning and found this article. In which the catholic church both offends and disgusts me.

I will start by explaining the latter. It makes the assumption that a woman needs a husband to be complete, and urges young women in Australia to marry quickly or they will miss out. Why, as a man, does this disgust me? because women do not need a husband to be complete! My own mother was married for only about two or three years and essentially raised my brother and I on her own. Women are quite capable of making their own way in the world using a multitude of different paths, many of which do not involve marriage at all.

So that leaves us with why I am offended by this article. The main reason is that the criteria for who is an "eligible" bachelor is rediculous! Married, defacto, and gay I will agree are not eligible bachelors. But single parents? earning under AU$60000/year? Come on! I think the single part of single parent implies that although they already have a child (or children) that they are otherwise available. And AU$60k/year? Come on! again! I went through four years of an engineering degree and emerged with first class honours and I don't make that much yet. So what the Catholic church is saying here is that to be considered an eligible bachelor, you must have no prior engagements resulting in children, and you must be university educated to the highest standard. This offends me on so many levels I can't even begin to express it in this blog post.

Thanks for reading,

At best they have lost the plot, and at worst, it is a distraction as more and more priests are disclosed. I thought this was a joke, but no, they are frigging serious. It is a distraction. I don't know who their PR is in Australia, but they really should be well and truly sacked. They just don't get why people are leaving in droves, and why they are running out of priests.

This caused a furore in Australia - it is just more misogynistic bullshit. I just luv it when unmarried men, with no idea of what constitutes a family is, let alone give advise to women, and then, on top of that, lets give men an inferiority complex if they aren't earning 60,000 per year. Unbelievable.

My thoughts exactly Suzanne. Lets hope the trend continues and they continue losing followers due to disgusting statements like this.

Of the 1.3 million women, how many are eligible wives? At least they were smart enough to not delineate that.   I take it a drug dealer making $100,000 a month is good to go, as long as he's not gay, married or single parent?

Good point Michael, I hadn't thought about that until I read a follow up piece in the opinion section of the same news site. Alot of the commenter's were suggesting probable criteria such as: dress size, current children, income, ability to cook and clean. I proposed polygamy as a potential solution to the looming man-drought.
