Many of us have all heard the claim that God/Jesus, as the source of all goodness is the only teacher we have about how to be good, and humanity on its own is a despicable race of
creatures. So, here’s what I don’t really understand.

What motivation do you have to be good all the time if you believe to your heart of hearts that God will always forgive you? Murder? Rape? No problem, just confess, say your magic chant, maybe shed some tears
and pledge to service as a faulty human being, and volia, you’re good to
go.

Think of it as a little kid, they know stealing from a cookie jar is wrong, but they also know if they sob and cry enough to mom afterward, they won’t get punished. What is there to stop them from
sealing more cookies, claiming a flawed nature, and getting away again?
Nothing. Only when the parent holds the child responsible for their
actions and punishes them accordingly, and only rewards the continued
behavior of not stealing, may they learn to not steal in the first
place.

The assumption of inherently flawed nature removes all real personal responsibility and accountability unless that person is caught by the law, and even then they can wiggle out of it. Just look at the
preacher who allegedly raped 200 deaf children! He cried enough to big
daddy, and that made it all ok, right?

The idea of goodness, of morality, has been around long before the Judeo-Christian god, exists in many realms that do not include it, and will exist long after.
