Can you forget you're an atheist?

Everyday it seems that some how there is always an occurrence that reminds me of my atheism. Something on the news or the documentary channel or a statement made by someone I encounter triggers an unspoken realization that what was presented to me is in direct conflict with my atheism. It seems trivial at times and then again there are instances where I am hard pressed to keep my 'pie hole' shut.

Is this normal? Do others commonly make it through a day with no thoughts about their atheism?

I don't really get that where I live.  I was in a conference in Vegas last week, and it struck me as odd the number of times God, religion or faith were mentioned.  It wasn't an offensive amount and no one was preaching, but my brain still stumbles over the fluidity with which people throw out extraneous religious references in everyday conversation.  And I'm even making exceptions for idiosyncratic expressions like 'God bless you' when someone sneezes.

On a broader level, I do encounter what you are talking about, but it's perhaps a few times a month at most.  I even lived next to a church for the bulk of the last five years.  The only reason I think about atheism daily is because I check this site most days, but obviously that's a choice I make.

Perhaps I am just hyper-sensitive as a result of my living in the bowels of fundamentalist America. It's nothing a glass or two of vino can't help me cope with.   ; ^)
