So I see a post on the Facebook wall of the Freethought Film Festival Foundation from Open Air Cinema, inviting us to join their contest to win an outoor movie system for our organization. I've always envisioned to some day be able to do a tour of freethought films with free outdoor screenings in various cities. Local secular groups often invite me to present, and it would be such a fun way to expand the reach of freethought films. The contest registration was easy enough, so I entered FFFF as a contender.
After I entered, I browsed to see what other organizations were in the running; and to find out by how much we were trailing for the lead. There are currently 64 entries, and in first place is a Catholic College in Croatia with 628 votes. Second & third place are less than half that many votes each at 302 to a park district and 288 for the Ft Bliss USO. After that it trails from only a few in the 100's, and the rest are double & single digits. I became hopeful after seeing these numbers, despite the fact that I had just learned about the contest that began in February, and will only be running for about five more weeks (June 15).
Even though there is nothing being asked of anyone other than to "Like" a page & vote, I quickly started to doubt whether or not we could win. The fact that the religious organization is so far in the lead speaks volumes as to the rallying power that such institutions have. How adorable of me to think that we might pull ahead.
Apparently God can't funnel his money to Croatia to buy a fucking inflatable movie screen and outdoor projector! No worries, He has multitudes of followers who will help stuff the ballot box...So ok, I'm on the bitter side when I'm reminded of the imbalance of resources between the superstitious institutions and reasonable organizations like the one I'm running--and I'm not even asking for cash! Just votes!! The name of the contest is actually called "CineHope". I don't want to be cyni-cal, but it's TOUGH...I want to have hope that individuals in the freethought community will rally behind FFFF to help us win equipment that will help us to carry out our mission of promoting reason through film. I can sit around all day and hope, or I can do what I can to spread the word about this contest...so I here I am blogging (bellyaching, bitching, begging, whatever).
We really need the votes!!!...and to make it even sweeter, if those who vote also make a comment, our entry will show up in the "Most Discussed" tab, which will give FFFF even more exposure. PLEASE HELP YOUR FILM FESTIVAL WIN THIS THING!
If you could vote at the link below, and then post the following on your own Facebook wall/page/group, in discussion forums, on your own blog/website and ask others to vote and share, we can blow this out of the water!
