AreAmericans bigots and racists?

I was once more listening to Rush Limaugh rant about plans to build the ‘ground O mosque’. An unlikely moment occurred though that confounded this bigot and racist. An intelligent caller managed to get past Rush’s screener and asked him why he was against the mosque being built when there was a mosque in the Pentagon.

Rush was silent for a few heartbeats, then said there was no mosque in the Pentagon, that it was a prayer center. But the caller came back with a knockout punch. Yes, he replied, but neither is the so called mosque a mosque. It is a community center containing a prayer center.

Rush went to a commercial . . .

"According to the new survey out Wednesday, nearly 70 percent of all Americans oppose the controversial plan to build the mosque just blocks away from the solemn site in lower Manhattan while just 29 percent favor the construction."

"Broken down by party affiliation, 54 percent of Democrats oppose the plans while 82 percent of Republicans disapprove. Meanwhile, 70 percent of independents said they are against the proposal."

"Plans to build the $100 million, 13-story 'Cordoba House' three blocks from the site of the attacks on September 11, 2001 have sparked an emotional debate throughout the city. The developer, Sharif El-Gamal, describes the project as an "Islamic community center" that will include a 500-seat performing arts center, a lecture hall, an exhibition space, a swimming pool, a gym, a culinary school, a restaurant and a prayer space for Muslims."

"This campaign [against Muslims] is nothing different than all of the standard, definitively bigoted efforts to hold entire demographic groups of people responsible for the aberrational acts of a small percentage of individual members." Glenn Greenwald, author.

I think the pod people have finally won when most Americans agree with Rush. 'Oh, brave new world that has such people in it."

John Farmer’s book: “The Ground Truth: The Story Behind America’s Defense on 9/11?

(CINCINNATI, Ohio) - In John Farmer’s book: “The Ground Truth: The Story Behind America’s Defense on 9/11?, the author builds the inescapably convincing case that the official version... is almost entirely untrue... The 9/11 Commission now tells us that the official version of 9/11 was based on false testimony and documents and is almost entirely untrue. The details of this massive cover-up are carefully outlined in a book by John Farmer, who was the Senior Counsel for the 9/11 Commission.

I definitely think that we are bigots. What ever happened two Rush, "Defeating liberals with half his brain tied behind his back?" I suppose that should have been, "Defeating liberals with two calls screeners in front of me."

My family is an example of reactionary Americans. They don't consider the picture, they hear the emotional argument that a mosque is being built on Ground Zero. That's how I first heard it and I recoiled inside, but as the evidence started showing itself, it was clear that it wasn't as originally described. It's a building that they bought on the cheap in a neighborhood that will one day come back. It's a few blocks away and not directly on the site. Gotcha. But by the point the info gets out, the minds were made up and emotions are running wild. It seems that even more than the bigotry argument, seems that they latch on to the rhetoric and remain faithful to it.

I wouldn't say Americans as a whole are bigots, you just have a shitload of them.

I hope you're right, Adriana, but just in case everyone should check under their bed tonight.

Wait! Stop!
Stop and listen to me!
Listen to me.
Those people that are coming
after me! They're not human!
Listen to me!
We're in danger!

The only answer is constantly good education in all states combined with unbiased reporting in the media. I have no idea how this will ever come about. Basically it is down to the average (and usually silent) US citizen to make enough fuss that these changes actually happen.

It might also be a good idea to find a legal way to prevent the misrepresentation of science by creationist/ID groups. Something that had severe financial penalties. After all if they star to loose money they will soon shut up and leave the education system alone.
