I disagree where you say that theists believe what they believe "through no fault of their own." Some never really imagine an option other than being christian. The problem is that they don't think about it. That is why the real issue here isn't athism here it all. It's critical thinking vs blind acceptance of dogma.

We need people to be honest, critical and reflective thinkers. Atheism is simply the conclusion at the end of this process. People who are "christian by default" have not gone through this process. Herein lies the problem.

I totally agree that it's the problem, but I don't consider it their fault until they've been shown there is another option. Many lead rather average lives and just don't seek out alternatives and may not come into knowing contact with atheists. I can't actually fault them for that, though I find it unfortunate.

However, I will say that now that atheism is becoming much more publicly discussed, this probably won't be the case for too much longer.
