my mom completly ignores my athiesm.

today she asked me to wirte an e-mail the church for prayer for her surgury.

guess what i actually did it, and i have to say i've still got the religous langueage right.

but i find it facinating that she didn't hesitate to ask me even though i haven't gone to church with her for years.

another night she asked the family to pray with her, i told her no but she won't hear it, so cause i feel bad i "pray" with her, (hold her hand and wait till she's done). So i'm asking, has this happened to you in your family?
have you appeased your beilefs for someone you love dearly? If so shy?

thanks,
Blu

I've never written a letter to a church...but I occasionally appease my parents by bowing my head at the dinner table.

I do respect other's beliefs...even when they don't respect mine.

actually, this reminds me of the dream I had last night.

I had a dream that since my mom has seen me reading the bible in my spare time, she assumed that I converted back to Christianity. When I told her I was just reading to learn more about world religion in general, and told her I am an atheist...I woke up. lmao

I concur with Mr. Heim. I too bow my head, not out of respect for "god", but out of respect for my loved ones. Despite my beliefs, I don't use them in a way to make my family feel ignorant. I respect what they believe, despite whether or not they respect how I feel or what I believe.

I've never sent or been asked to send a prayer letter to a church. My parents don't really try to push their religion on me since I told them I am an Atheist either. So they don't ever ask me to pray for anything. Closest was when an aunt of mine was going in for her breast cancer surgery. My dad flat asked my brother to pray form her and said to me, "I know you don't pray, but keep her in your thoughts if you would." As far as saying grace... I don't. I don't say no or make a fuss either. I just sit quietly while the rest bow their head and smile at the little kids that are confused and looking around.

Hey guys, thanks for responding.

I agree with all of you in that i do try to respect my mom's beliefs on God. However when she asks me to say grace on the table, i simply can't do it. I don't know what to say anymore, i can't even fake it. Writing is different because you expect a certain thought process. My dad knows I'm atheist (he's a skeptic/deist) so he's cool. But I love my mom to death and I know that she won't change anytime soon so for now i just deal.
