A Rockland man charged with setting fire to an adult store in Weymouth told authorities he set the fire for religious reasons, according to police reports obtained by the Patriot Ledger.
Jon Fernald, 44, of Rockland is facing arson and burglary charges in connection to the three-alarm fire at Amazing Intimate Essentials store Saturday.
He told the police he was a former customer of the store and blamed it for what he described as his addiction to pornography.
The Ledger reports:
"Mr. Fernald stated he wanted to get some revenge against the store so he set the fire because God does not like pornography," Weymouth Police Detective Timothy Browning wrote in his report. ...
Fernald also told the officers he had been hearing voices telling him to light the store on fire for several days, according to the report.
Fernald remains in the hospital with burn injuries this week, and will undergo a mental competency evaluation.
The cost of damages to the store and other nearby businesses are estimated near $1 million.
