My creativity comes bursts. Short, intense, mind-consuming bursts.

It has been unusually warm for February in the Milwaukee area, and so I have been spending more time outside lately. Being able to enjoy nature once again reminded me how remarkable this crazy world again and how lucky I am to be able to take part in it. It sparked this idea for a poem, and I couldn't put it down until I got it out. Then I felt inclined to share it with you guys. Now I don't write a lot of poems...hell most of my time is spent being assaulted by my organic chem be gentle, but I'd love to hear what you think.

When I gaze up at the sky
I expect no gods to show,
but only awe at wispy clouds
or softly falling snow.

No holy voice could stay me
quite like the sunrise will
when it rises over mountain peaks
in morning soft and still.

No king of heaven rules me.
It's the laws of time and space,
which move the planets 'round the sun,
that put me in my place

I need neither guilt from ancient book,
nor prompt from law or creed
to know its right to ease the pain
of my fellow man in need.

And when I'm in my darkest hour
When I feel my most alone
I turn not to some bearded man
upon some glassy throne.

I find my solace in the thunder
of waves upon the beach
or the subtle smell of summer nights
and stars far out of reach.

And when my life is over,
I long to hear no trumpet sound
nor spend forever praising.
I'd rather rest then underground.

For I find more peace in knowing
the land will use me as she needs,
to build her next great mountain
or to nourish tiny seeds.

And only in that humble way
will I truly find rebirth.
I am no child of heaven,
Just a simple child of earth.
