In the last week we have had a number new members from all over the Middle East and South East Asia. Many of these members are former Muslims from Islamic countries. I notice this because I and a few of the moderators scan through the new members daily looking for bots whom would post spam. It's how we largely keep the site clean of it. If you ever see it, let us know and we'll boot them quickly.

The recent influx leaves me asking myself the question, "What is the impetus for the new members?" Is it random? Did the Think Atheist website get brought up on another forum of younger people in the Middle East? Is it a trend of youth walking away from Islam? Or is there a simple explanation like the South Park threats that is causing a youth to say enough is enough?

If you are a new member from the Middle East whom cares to share an opinion or why we might have seen a recent migration to the site from like minded people, I'd be interested to hear it. Welcome to all of the new members!

Walking away from Islam takes guts, but I hope to see more people do it. Maybe they finally realize how wrong their religion and how it is a magnet for irrational thought and violence.

hi Gaytor,
I'm an egyptian atheist who joined this network like four months ago but i was still more affiliated with facebook which has been disabling our accounts, groups and pages so many times without any warnings. we atheists are not welcomed to speak out our thoughts and criticize religions there. so we decided to get connected here instead, i personally feel so comfortable here and like we're all one big family .
and for sure i'd like to thank you guys for keeping this website clean of spams =)

I really don't know much about this, but isn't it almost exclusively ex-muslim atheists that are getting their facebook accounts disabled?

I noticed the influx, too. I'm very happy to be able to connect with these people.

That's so weird that Facebook is deleting their profiles like that. I wonder if it has something to do with some governments' relationships with Facebook.

It's nice to get viewpoints from our global community of free thinkers here at TA.

it is a brave thing to do. Even in the most religious parts of the USA, it is nothing compared to the middle-east.

As a former Muslim and former Christian (yes, I was raised both), I'm glad to hear of the recent influx of Muslim members.

Being a commercial enterprise of its size, it's not surprising that they will grovel and pander to the religious elements out there. The same goes for YouTube; they're always pulling videos in order to avoid offending a few vocal extremists...and not just Muslims.

We are a group of militant atheists from the middle east who are active on facebook. Unfortunately recently facebook has started closing our profiles and groups because muslims are reporting us heavily. They have groups and events specially designed to report and close our groups!!!
We came here to think atheist knowing that here things will be different and that we can talk without being harassed :)
Lovely site. I'm in love with it already :)

Don't worry about that here. I think that I speak for all of the admins in saying we'd be happy to tell them to beat it and defend our common ground.
