On December 20, 1996, at the age of 62, died one of the greatest minds of 20th century: Carl Sagan, an American astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist, popularizer of science and rational thinking. He died at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, after a long and difficult fight with myelodysplasia. I don't think I have to tell you about his importance, and the role he played in the popularization and defense of rational thought.
Carl Sagan is one of my role-models, a figure which I shall forever remember by his playful smile, the way he admired the beauty of nature, and the way he talked about it. When I first watched 'Cosmos', I immediately knew 'what I wanted to be when I grow up'.
Carl, you will never be forgotten.
Comment by Becca on December 20, 2011 at 1:38am He truly was a great man and is a role model for myself as well. He made science astronomy in particular fascinating and piqued my interest in science at a young age. Cosmos is still the best and most informative TV series on science and space there is out there, he managed to make science accessible to the average viewer without dumming it down.
Comment by KaraC on December 20, 2011 at 3:58am I can't resist saying this, but "billions, and billions of people" loved Carl Sagan :-) He was a great scientists and very inspirational. One of the people that got me into physics.
