Why is it that I have NO ONE to talk to? My mom is a devout Protestant Christian, my dad is a conspiracy theorist and a homosexual "Christian" & I have no friends who agree with my worldviews... What's a girl to do?
This community loves people who think differently than themselves! We are atheists and we don't agree on everything, but we still value open discussion and debate.
So start a conversation and tell us your views on political or social issues and I'm sure you'll find everyone very friendly here. :)
@Tim S You could tell your parents that he is actually an atheist. The title atheist says nothing about the person. If you are agnostic than you are an atheist. If you don't hold a belief about a god or gods than by definition you are an atheist. He is an agnostic atheist, plain and simple. Try to explain that to them and watch their heads spin.
T|A is a fantastic cyber community for the exchange of ideas and feeling support. I also suggest you look in to your local area for a Humanist organization, there is also the Freedom From Religion Foundation that has many chapters around the country (and world). The best part of these interactions is when you walk in to a crowded room for the first time and you realize that, not only are you not alone, but you are in VERY good company. There are alot of us out, we just enjoy playing hide-and-go-seek, lol.
If someone excludes me because of my thinking then I don't feel I've lost anything. I hang with open minded liberal people and as such it doesn't come up much. I do remember the day my father asked me why I wasn't going to church. I explained that I didn't believe there was a god when children are born and died without ever knowing a full stomach. He thought a moment and said, 'WELL YOU WILL !!" at which point I thought the old man was seriously going to take a swing at me but he continued with "BECAUSE I'M GOING TO MAKE A NOVENA !!. It must have been a long novena because he died years later and I haven't changed my thinking an iota.
Welcome to the board Ms. Ashley C Bachman.
Welcome Ashley. I feel your pain. I love my family and they try, but sometimes it feels like the only thing they see about me know is my atheism. I might suggest finding a local atheist group if you have one and if there isn't one a group that built around a hobbie or activity that is religious free may give you a community where your atheism isn't an issue.
me too no one agrees with my views... so, that's why I am here.. this is my real home..
you can add friends here on TA and talk to them as much as you can.. of course, they agree with you :-)
Hi Ashley, we are here to talk with you whenever you need us! And just because you are a rational, logical, thinker, don't ever let the pie in the sky fanatics make you doubt yourself, not that they ever could. It's interesting that the "believers", are the ones that look at us like we are crazy but we are not the one's living a fantasy. It's hard to shake the GOD mindset if you've had it shoved down your throat since you were born. That and the fear people have of death, and living for that matter, make it even harder, then there's the gullibility factor. It's going to take time to turn those minds around. The few, the proud, the strong, the ATHEIST.
Wow Ashley , that is a trip , your explanation on family and lack of people with whom you can actually have an intelligent conversation with , I found myself in a bit of laughter when I read your post . I wasn't laughing at you I was laughing at the situation which for me is one of the greatest things in the life of an Atheist ... So much entertainment is out there for people like us just sit back and watch the insanity that is religion and you will have hours and hours of comedy as for not having anyone to talk to , not true here we are ,,,,welcome :))\
Mike, is that suppose to be some kind of insult? Elitist...lol..far, far from it.
