What do people mean by this?

Why is it okay to say I Believe In Jesus. I Believe In God. But I Am Not Religious. ?

How does that makes things okay?

Do they not read the Bible?

Do they not go to Church?

What do people mean by not being Religious, yet having faith in the God of the Holy Bible?

Probably because people Hear 'not religious' and think "I look down on your religion"

I think they mean they agree in principle about religion, but they don't want to take it too seriously.

It could also come from not thinking about it at all until someone asks.  It's a way of saying I'm from a Christian background, but I'm not practicing, and while we're at it I don't want to get serious about it.  It's an off-putting way of answering a question about beliefs.

I can generally get along with people who don't take their faith too seriously.  I don't mind it if people are religious but willing to consider other points of view without getting defensive.  In fact, this is even true of atheism for me.  If someone is militant or orthodox in their atheism, I find it more difficult to relate to them.

they're nitpicking. they define christianity or w/e the best it suits them. it's how it's always been really. you're not gonna find a "religious" christian anywhere because no christian would agree that it's okay to sell women, have slaves, kill people for how worshiping their god, etc etc.

Maybe it means they don't believe in the "organized" part of it. Maybe they don't go to church or follow the bible, don't consider themselves one religion in particular...?

I've known many people who would classify themselves as spiritual but not religious. They either still ascribe to a particular religion or have turned to something like deism, but they believe that it is a personal journey and that organized religion is not necessary (or antithetical) to spiritual development. When I turned away from religion, I did it a few steps at a time. I spent several years as a nonreligious Christian. I believed in god and the sacrifice of Jesus, but I also believed that the church was an unnecessary and destructive force in the world, both in a literal and spiritual sense. I also believed that the bible was full of lies written by men but that little nuggets of divinity had nonetheless managed to make it to the final cut. After that I went with eclectic deistic paganism... but still classified myself as spiritual nonreligious. I've since ditched all that, but that's how I felt in the past and that's how several people I know think now (in varying degrees).

I think it means whatever it means. You have to ask them.

I think I identified myself as believing in God but not being religious in between being raised Catholic and now being Atheist. Once I got out of Catholic school I found very little meaning in going to mass, saying the rosary, going to confession, getting ashes on my forehead at the beginning of Lent, and the many other things that Catholic people are supposed to get excited about. So I stopped doing all of that but still liked the idea of God, which I mainly conceptualized as a nice guy who listens to our thoughts and cares about us when we need support. So... perhaps believing in God while not being religious just means that the person made up his/her own religion that seems better than the organized ones. :) I think people do this all the time since, as others have pointed out, few people actually follow every rule set up in their "religion." Fyi, as an Atheist now, I currently get excellent social support from real people. :)
