Jason, thank you! My blog has been hijacked by a (very interesting ) debate on non-human organ replacements and its relevence (or lack of) to evolution but still, I'm pleased they found the question thought provoking! :)

Holland - you must have posted at the same time as me earlier! I have wondered if dragons were a result of people finding dinosaur bones but i was never sure how deep down they would be - it seems as if records of people discovering them are relatively recent and I always meant to look into that more - they could be found could they by people digging without any technology or industrial equipment? Thats probably a silly question as foundations for large buildings must always have had to be deep.

On the subject of dinosaur bones & dragons, I've heard that the skulls of extinct pygmy elephants on Crete inspired the legends of cyclopses, since the nasal cavity looks like an enormous eye socket.
