Without god(s) to tell me who to hate and who to love, I have to find my own way.

These are my values.

1) Judgement.

"Judge not least.."

Nope. Wrong again.

For those of you that spread pain, I judge you.

Not by skin color. Not by ancestry. Not by blood or body type.

By actions.

If you make a decision to cause suffering to another person and hide behind an excuse of religion, culture, preference or simple agreement by association, I judge you.

I find you lacking as a human being, weak minded and simplistically sadistic. While I will never call for your physical harm, I would also not shed a tear if you were removed from the genetic pool before you passed on your flawed behavior either through offspring or education.

I think the world is a better place without you and I hope you leave it very, very quickly.

Racists. Homophobes. Misogynists. Anti-Educators.

I judge you. I find you lacking.

2) Good Works.

I never asked to be born. This life isn't some ticket I earned. There is no afterlife I need to prove myself for.

There is this life. Probably nothing else. I don't plan on having kids and I know that the human existence is just a blink in the awesome scope of the cosmos.

I'm ok with that.

I'm not having kids so what happens after I die is really the responsibility of people who DO plan on reproducing. But since I'm a little annoyed to be born into a world of pollution and litter, I'm not going to add to it. Be not a hypocrite. I like having fresh air, so I try to reduce my impact on this planet. Not because it's my 'duty' but because I think it is kind of dicked not to.

As a world traveler, I know my carbon footprint isn't a small one. I try to balance this out by dedicating time and money to keeping our oceans clean, eating responsibly farmed foods and driving a piece of shit car that gets 50 miles to the gallon, but doesn't go over 60mph.  That is my contribution globally. Nationally, I feel that it is absolutely humiliating that we have men that served our countries going hungry on the streets. If we can't properly care for the vets we have now, why the fuck are we making new ones? I am politically active because I love my country and I want it to flourish. I love my countrymen (even the dumb ones) and what to participate in leading my nation into a future of prosperity.

I do good works because I want to live in a good world. That's the bottom line.

3) Morality.

Are you harming anyone? Are you costing the tax payers an undue burden?

Then your business is your own.

Glad we cleared that up.

4) Traditions

Now this is a hard one! My husband's an immigrant, my in-laws live over seas. I'm anti-religious but pro-nuclear-family.

Holidays are interesting. We make up our own. If something is fun, we do it again the next year. We are starting our own traditions based in things we LIKE and want to do.. not things we are socially obligated to do. It's cool. I'd totally recommend giving it a shot. Sometimes we celebrate arbitrary, foreign holidays just as a way to learn about another culture. When you view religion in the same light that you do music and art (Beautiful and inspiring in some parts, boring in others but over all decorative instead of literal) this stuff becomes fun!

This is what we currently celebrate:

Burns Night-A nod to the Scottish side of our family. So far we can't get haggis in the U.S. Anyone know if it's possible?

Thanksgiving-A nod to the American side..and because I think it's a damn good holiday! We all have a LOT to be thankful for. It's nice to reflect upon that officially at least once a year. Take time to realize how good we have it.

New Year- Way bigger when we lived in Asia. Might skip it while we are in the U.S.

Halloween- My hand's down favorite holiday. The best place to spend it is in SF, I believe.

Big Brew Day- Celebrated world wide. It's actually next weekend if anyone is interested. We will be attending in San Leandro.

These aren't values as defined by an atheist.

I'm just an atheist and these are my values.

What are yours? Why do you possess them?

I don't think I've ever sat down and thought about my values long enough to write them down as eloquently as you have, but here's a list off the top of my head:

Don't be a dick.
Treat people how you'd like to be treated.
Shut your damn mouth once in awhile and listen.
If you don't treat your woman right, another guy will.
Science flies you to the moon, faith flies you into buildings.
You'll never love another until you love yourself.
Grow some balls. Keep said balls in your pants.

I like one liners too much I suppose :D

I value the integrity of the natural environment before everything else.

@Boci-

I challenge that.

If you really valued the integrity of the natural environment, "before everything else." you wouldn't be sitting in a home or office with electricity, typing on a piece of technology that was made in a factory that damaged our world. I don't know anything more about you than that, but I bet with very few details I could still point out about a million ways where you put your own minor comforts before the natural environment.

5) Getting Results.
We don't have an afterlife to reward us for intention.
Evolution only rewards those that survive. Period. And survival itself is the reward.
Good will not conquer evil at the end just simply because it is good. If evil has the advantage, it will succeed in populating yet more evil.
If you are going to fail, don't die trying.
Wow. That sounds militant.
