An atheist milestone. I'm sure we all have them. Small victories.

So yesterday I decided to make the twice yearly call I attempt to my parents. We aren't very close, and that's partially because they are right wing, god fearing, gun toting, religious types. That isn't something that people from my family can agree to disagree on. While on the phone with one of my aunts, I was telling her my present woes and she offered to pray for me.
In the background I heard my mom yell. "You shouldn't say that! She's an atheist!"
To which my aunt yelled back, "So? I'm not!" and then return to the conversation as if nothing had transpired.

As petty as this sounds, this is a big deal for me.
The thought of my mother even admitting my atheism out loud, let alone to another person...and then let alone again to a person from her huge. Moments later when my aunt handed the phone over, she didn't even launch into one of her usual Glen Beck style tirades. In fact, neither religion nor politics were brought up at all.
It was a pleasant conversation. Nice enough, in fact...I might make an effort for a few more calls a year.

Congrats on your atheist win! You should check out my mom story. I know exactly how you feel about having a religious mom so its nice you have a better relationship with her now.

Congrats! Hopefully this is the beginning of her accepting you for you without any arguments.

You know, I actually appreciate the "So? I'm not" kind of response. She's not trying to say "You should pray!", but that she's sending positive thoughts your way. Kinda like when a little kid writes you a fake check for a bazillion dollars. It doesn't do much to solve your problems, but it does show they care. More importantly, she wasn't trying to force you to practice her faith with her.

Congrats for your mom's acceptance!!
