In the last week we have had a number new members from all over the Middle East and South East Asia. Many of these members are former Muslims from Islamic countries. I notice this because I and a few of the moderators scan through the new members daily looking for bots whom would post spam. It's how we largely keep the site clean of it. If you ever see it, let us know and we'll boot them quickly.

The recent influx leaves me asking myself the question, "What is the impetus for the new members?" Is it random? Did the Think Atheist website get brought up on another forum of younger people in the Middle East? Is it a trend of youth walking away from Islam? Or is there a simple explanation like the South Park threats that is causing a youth to say enough is enough?

If you are a new member from the Middle East whom cares to share an opinion or why we might have seen a recent migration to the site from like minded people, I'd be interested to hear it. Welcome to all of the new members!

This is actually pretty exciting, inspiring and, honestly, a bit scary (not scary enough to back down though). I'm so glad that the ex-Muslims of Facebook found a home here! We welcome the controversy and hope more repressed individuals come here to throw off the shackles of religion! :)

@Cara Coleen,
Actually, I'M repressed, the other guys are oppressed. :-)
In all seriousness, though, isn't it great?:

It's up, but not done. I've set everything to private so that no one can say anything. I'll get to building on it this week and figure out what we can do with it. I'm thinking that if we simply have a sign post directing those with questions here, and a quiet billboard to those that would oppress free speech saying that the speech is still going on and there is nothing that you can do about it, it could be a fun little kiss my ass.
Feel free to join and get the stats up so that it's visible. Happy to take ideas too.

About me ...
I joined facebook, I found & met people are like me, 2 years ago i thought that people who convert or leave religion are not too much and have reasons.
thanks to facebook but now its not a good place for us
we need a place that we can talk as atheists without those religious people.
I think its the right place.
and because we are all friends from facebook we came together and there is still a lot didn't know yet
but sooner or later they will join ;)

I joined TA a month or so back and before that I wasn't involved in any atheist forums. I am an ex-Muslim from Pakistan though I am residing in Middle East at the moment. I too have noticed this recent influx and wasn't aware of the facebook community migrating here, but I am noticing an increase in censoring of content especially on YouTube (almost half of the videos that I favorited are now unavailable there).

I found TA through Stumble Upon and my main motive for joining this community was to be able to interact with others with other atheists and to raise a voice against Islam (as it is the root of most problems our world faces and cause of numerous suffering in Islamic countries which must be stopped). Anyways, its refreshing to see many ex-Muslims on this forum! :-)
