The Reality of Christian Terrorism
For years now whenever I am in a debate with Christians and the topic reaches over into my anti-theistic view I constantly get answers along the lines of, "The Gospel teaches salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. There is no meriting salvation or earning righteousness. Everything in a Christian's life is gifted and there is no rational way to feel superior to others with a Christian belief." and "I don't see that really happening in the Christian world, but why should it bother him [in response to Sam Harris's video "Science can answer moral questions"] if people live out their own view? Apart from Muslim extremists, the average Christian goes to work, puts gas in his car, takes care of his family, and goes to movies just like anyone else. I don't see the warrant for the fear."

Islam is a violent religion, certainly, and also one I consider to be much more violent than Christianity. But Christianity is far from the religion of love it's followers make it out to be. It has directly caused and instigated the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people throughout history, and it continues to do so today.
In this post I do not want to focus on the violent past of Christianity, although the first few entries will offer a brief overview. We all know about the gory Crusades and the horrific "Enlightenment," but that was just Christians doing what they had to do in order to initiate Christianity as the leading religious authority. At least that's what I get told whenever I bring it up, as though the agenda justifies the actions.

Philosophically it leads to an intellectual cul-de-sac, and institutionally it condones depraved acts which are overlooked by deluded Christians wallowing in the centre of their religion of love because they consider "Christian terrorism" to be an impossible oxymoron, when in actual fact, based on past and present actions by Christian groups, the two go together like a match and petrol. I have tried to keep my sources more reliable than Wikipedia and blog posts. I encourage you to do your own research on these topics as well if you're interested, some of these sources naturally have their own biases. But regardless, the barefaced facts are too numerous to ignore. I also did not want to simply spam you with a list of atrocities and politics that you just have to take at face value, in defense of the masses of links.

American based Christian ministries pushed the Ugandan anti-homosexuality bill which states that all people engaging in homosexual activity should be put to death, all people harbouring homosexuals should be put to death, and all who have engaged in acts of serial homosexuality should be put to death. If someone has sex with someone of the same sex and does not report them, they are both put to death. If someone knows of a homosexual or a homosexual couple but does not report them then they are also put to death.

And I agree, people fail to see how Christianity as an institution has stood in the way of scientific progress and advancemnt in ethics for hundreds of years. We have seperation of church and state, yet interracial marriage was banned for everyone in the country no matter what faith, and all based on bible verses. It's easy to make the bible fit whatever message you want to present. Of course, Christians today will say they had "interpreted the verses incorrectly." Come on people, wake up!

I've been an atheist for most of my adult life and I only recently became more vocal about it because of how terrified I am of this sort of thing. While my personal experience is with Judaism (I'm an Israeli), it seems to be the same with all religions.

It's really scary how people can hold these warped, limited world views all because of their book of fairy tales. The whole of monotheism MUST be stopped. Polytheism will fade away harmlessly, given enough time.
BTW, that whole "through faith alone" is an abortion of accountability, and I'm surprised I never realized how abhorrent the whole idea was when I was a believer. But then when you bring up Christians who do terrible things and ask if they will go to heaven, you get the same bull crap "But they weren't true Christians." But if you counter by asking "So you have to ACT like a decent person to get into heaven as well as believe?" you get a nonsense response of "No no no, you're only saved by believing."
OY! The whole idea is totally stupid, and it's amazing people still believe in this confusing garbage!

@ Lindsey, Haha, I reckoned that would be the case for most people, no worries :) I just put them up there for reference sake. Some articles were hard to track down and I spent quite a while researching some of them. I'm going to keep adding to this list regularly to try to make it as up to date and comprehensive as possible. It's a useful list to have on hand the next time someone repeats that nonsense in the first paragraph to me.
@ Mario, I'm constantly fighting against how Christians try to justify the atrocities in the OT. They see it as culturally relative and always say I'm taking things out of context whenever I bring it up, but *this* is what it's fueled. Sigh.

It's still bullcrap because if God was all-perfect and could see the future, he could've given the Israelites a leg-up on the rest of society by telling them right on the spot that slavery, genocide, and infanticide will be wrong in the future so they might as well be wrong for them during that time period. Does he? NO!

What's worse is that they are far from consistent with their own teachings and Biblical interpretations, which is why there are 38000 denominations. They generalise about their own religion like they generalise about everyone else, in the same way that I'm generalising now except that they just don't see it. Some say to ignore the OT, some say that the NT supports the OT, some say the God of the OT was evil etc. The whole deal is just a complete trainsmash, and that ^ proves it. That isn't even a comprehensive list, just the things that crossed my mind to research until I got hungry/tired.

Religious people would never do so much research. This is the work of a rational human being- who also happens to love donkeys (awesome).
I doubt I'll be able to go through all of them. But this is epic!
