Capote talks about "sincerity"?!

George, can you unload on the 'sincerity' point? Not challenging you or exalting Capote, just researching over here :)

My charge is not a scholarly one, just an impression based on little reading. "Answered Prayers" suggests he used his reputation to gain entry to people he wanted as "friends" so that he cld write abut them. That shows "insincerity."  But isn't sincerity overrated?

I'm really just beginning my research on Capote, and I will make a point of looking up 'Answered Prayers.' He ended up an atheist, or so he says.

I actually prize sincerity. I see it not so much as a presence, but as an absence - an absence of deceit or it's variants. I equate willful deceit with malice.

Hitchens admits disguising his contempt for General Videla when they shook hands in 1977 in order to gain access. Perhaps he hid his revulsion to simply save his life.

Choosing not to reveal, knowingly let people believe something untrue are passive actions, or they are the absence of any action in my opinion.

It's a bit like the final Seinfeld episode and the Massachusetts law about 'criminal inaction,' isn't it?
