I'm new to all this and have finally opened my eyes and more so, my mind.  I was lost in the world of religion and now that I am free of it, I feel great!  I do have one question.  How do you handle the religious folk that come to your door wanting to talk to you about religion, church, etc?

lately i yell "Atheist" in subway tunnels and bus shelters.

the response is normally "i'll pray for you" which, to me anyway, may as well be "fuck you, you Atheist asshole"... To which I giggle my ass off and go about the business of living this life cause, as a good friend once told me, "Noel, you do know that this isn't a dress rehearsal? This thing called life"...

I used to get those people all the time when I lived in a trailer park, every weekend. They were always old women and children so I would be polite, but they usually got scared off by all the weed and transvestitism. Now I live in an apartment, a few blocks from the hood, and they never ever come.

We are lucky in Australia that religion rarely comes up between people. We generally avoid talking about it.

They had been trained to address certain responses to particular statements and questions. But they were unprepared to go off-script and handle direct challenges to theism itself.

They are used to dealing with people who already believe in not just god, but the god of the bible, and the bible itself.  So all they normally have to do is convince a Xian that their interpretation of scripture is plausible.  That's the level they are going to work at, and it has made their church wildly successful.  They can live with the occasional failure when they run into an atheist buzzsaw.

Ironically, many of the features of Xianity that make no sense (I don't just mean are unproven, I mean that they would make no damn sense even if they were true) are absent from JWism.  Of course they had to address the bullshit deficit by adding enough of their own peculiar nonsense to make up for that.

I used to hide from them, but over the last few years I've embraced my own atheistic ideas about god and have read extensively on other religious. When they come to my door, I am more apt to sit on the porch with them and start having a discussion with them. I don't go after their religious beliefs as an attack, but I do ask pointed questions about WHY they believe and how they came to that believe. Depending on their answers, I may question them about certain aspects of their holy book to see how they deal with them. I'll freely share my lack-of belief and give them multiple reasons as to why I feel it is a more realistic and honest view of the world, and yet I never say that I "know" the answers to these ultimate questions, and I've always got my eyes open to some new compelling fact. In general, these meetings go well. I learn more about them and how the layman frames their beliefs, and I get a change to educate them that atheists are not satan-worshipping baby-killers, nor the enemies they have been taught through their church and religious groups. We usually part with a handshake and a "good luck" and a smile.
