Mom gets dog 'blessed & baptized.'

Had my hair blown back today by my Mom. She told my wife that she went to her methodist church minister and had her dog blessed and baptized. She says now she doesn't have to worry about what will happen to her beloved pooch after it dies. Huh?

Is this a common thing for widowed elderly women to do? I am troubled that she is losing perspective on what constitutes a healthy relationship with her pet. This dog is more important than anything or anyone at this point in her life. I own and love pets myself but this kind of behavior is somewhat unsettling. Not sure which folder to file this one in....lol

Maybe the church will soon be suggesting that it might be a good idea to donate or bequeath some money to them so that they can continue to Gods work of baptizing dogs? File under "barking mad".

That is not a laughing matter as my dear sis has expressed that very concern. I mean, you're phucked if the old girl decides to leave everything to the pampered pooch. Or maybe the church. The idea of other lower order mammals also having a corridor to the pearly gates is REALLY a bit too much for me to grasp. I am not on my motorcycle but my hair is still blowing like in a hurricane....lol

It's a little refreshing to hear about an animal getting rights instead of "being here for the benefit of man" so oddly enough im ok with it.

I sometimes use the pet angle to shock-treat Christians with a bit of reality.  Start by asking them if they think their fav pet is going to heaven - and most will say yes.  Then ask if there will be bees, rattle snakes, and tarantulas in heaven, :D

It usually gives them some pause to try to think.

Wonder if they would baptize an ape? Or would that cause an uproar? How about starting the First Methodist Church of the Apes?

Oh no... God likes poodles much more than apes... Because they're fluffy, you know.

It sounds like the actions of a lonely, frightened (of dying), elderly person who is anthropomorphizing their non human companion in order to not feel so alone and to display how much they appreciate that companion.

I can not bring myself to mock or make light of someone who is just alone and afraid. Regardless how unfounded that fear is.

How nice of you not to mock the elderly.  I think if we want to change things,  we need to be careful about how atheists are perceived.  I don't mean any disrespect,  just making a point.

Only God and humans have souls. Animals don't have souls according to Christian theology. Hell, even angels don't have souls!

Blessing and baptizing a dog is blasphemous.

@Erik - The elderly are the new niggers. You run into that from time to time here.
