I'm about to move to Chicago, and work in The Loop--but I don't want to live in the loop, perhaps a quieter less expensive place that is close to some form of public transportation that could get me quickly to the loop?

Does anyone know anything about Chicago and care to advise me on...anything. This is becoming scary !

This is a Debbie downer but I had a girlfriend move their for a job and two months into it, her apartment got broken into. She later moved away a year later or so. I visited her once and things just seem on edge their. I wish you the best of luck though!

Southport neighborhood is great but expensive these days, Rogers Park is affordable.

The key to finding rental situations is timing. Don't expect to get a great place your first go round, just affordable and acceptable. Keep your eyes out for deals as you learn more about the city.

Also, I recommend stopping by local -non-national real estate agents offices. They often have unadvertised great apartments, but you might need to have an interview with the owners of the property.

I found a great place in NYC using that system.

When I lived in Chicago (about 15 years ago), I found it was MUCH cheaper to live on the northwest side than in the Loop.  For one thing, parking in the Loop will destroy you if you have a car.  If you can find a reasonable apartment on the northwest side that has relatively easy bus and el access, you can really live a lot more cheaply.

On the upside- if you like REAL GOOD pizza you're in luck!
