I post a lot of things about being atheist on Facebook; I realize this.  I live in the South immersing me right in the center of all religious perversions.  I have people delete me almost daily because of the things I post.  None of this ever really bothered me because I live a moral, ethical life and if someone didn't want to be digital friends with me because of my beliefs; so be it.

It was different this time because it was one of my real life friends.  Someone that knows me, and knows how good of a person I try to be.  Cannot be friends with me because of my beliefs.  I'm generally a very insensitive person most of the time, but this hurt my heart.

I'm becoming more and more of a militant atheist, and it's hard for me to even hear things about Christianity without getting heated in my head.  I need to move.

Catholics believe in talking animals, a world wide flood, all the world's animals fitting on one boat (and the aquatic life surviving the massive salinity upheaval) a grown man surviving in a whale for three days and angel wrestling. That's not even going into the absurdity of bread and wine turning into flesh and blood because a holy man mumbled over them.

-You don't get to call anyone else wacko. You believe in magic water.

Mormons and Evangelicals make up MILLIONS of people and the vast majority of American Republicans. Hell, there are even hundreds of thousands of Jehovah's Witnesses outside the U.S, too. You do not get to invalidate the self identification of millions of Christians worldwide because of a few hairs you'd like to split.

You don't think Mormons are real Christians because of whatever reason and they don't think you are real Christians because you worship idols, in their view. Who cares? John 3:16 is the foundation for MANY faiths that are considered Christian denominations, whether you like it or not.

It's the definition of a word, my friend. You don't get to change it to suit your own world views.

Here is what the dictionary says:

a : one who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ

(1) : disciple 2 (2) : a member of one of the Churches of Christ separating from the Disciples of Christ in 1906 (3) : a member of the Christian denomination having part in the union of the United Church of Christ concluded in 1961

Here is also a nice ask.com article about Christian denominations world wide. See how it's considered common knowledge that Evangelicals and Mormons and everyone else is considered Christian?

Sorry, but your argument for 'community' falls.

Again, please see the "No True Scotsman Fallacy.'

There are several things that I think you need to address:

If a friend un-friends you because you are an atheist then they cannot be that good a friend (and they make a lousy christian)

You will make many friends on here and they will provide lots of support and advice. There are other social sites and groups as well, Twitter is great, with a strong atheist group of people, goodreads also has atheist member groups.

If it is possible you could move to a state with fewer relious zealots or, though a bit more drastic, emigrate to a secular country, the UK is very secular and my atheism causes no problems, in fact a devoutly religious person would attract more disdain than an atheist in most of the places I frequent.

You can always ask, "Do you think Jesus would unfriend a nonbeliever? Isn't that the exact opposite of what Jesus taught?"

Can you name one such verse, @Cody?  Or is this one of those myths that you atheists just believe. ;-)

Maybe he can't, but Psalms 14:1 gets quoted at us a lot.  Oftentimes at maximum volume.

Talk about being ignorant of one's own religion...

I read your facebook post... Considering that you live in southern area, your approach is somewhat abrasive.

Even if I agree with almost everything you wrote, I can see why is giving you problems.
