Sometimes you think about something and then keep noticing it popping up everywhere. So anyway I was recently pondering in a not to serious manner if there were any links between Atheism and fitness and in particular obesity. Then I heard a DJ on a radio talk show comment that it was quite likely that Atheists were unfit and overweight because they probably have not much concern about the future. You know the way we don’t have a positive outlook on life because we are so miserable all the time. We apparently suffer from the vice called Greed and we also lack self-control. Anyway lets’ not go there on trying to even work that one out. Then I got a mailshot with a link to a topic on “Who is fatter – Atheists or Theists? So I thought I would ask what you think.

Now I know that there would not appear to any correlation between Atheism and Obesity. However it may be that we do take our health more seriously if we look at the world through more scientific eyes. Maybe we see through the marketing more. Maybe as we know that as we only have one life we want to enjoy it as much as possible so we take more notice of what we consume. We all agree some Theists will swallow just about anything but would there be anything in their worldview to make them less concerned. I anticipate plenty of comments on the Jesus biscuits and the bloody wine.

Are you careful about what you eat? Do you try to keep fit?  Are your more like Penn or more like Teller?

For the record I am 5ft 11inches, 170lbs and a BMI of 23.7 though I am not to up on the scientific value of the BMI scale. I don't smoke and seldom drink alcohol. I do moderate regular exercise and am fit and healthy. I avoid sugary or salty foods whenever possible and try to eat fresh food rather than processed. I am not too fussy about it all though.

Like most atheists I don't always eat christians, but when I do, I prefer Soylent Green. Actually I do enjoy working out and eating right because I just feel better when I do.

I am 6'0", 216 lbs. Last year I made it up to 230 and decided I didn't like that, so I lost 20 and gained a few back, but glad I made it through this Thanksgiving without really gaining. I also just bought a workout station that should help me through the winter when it is more difficult to work off the calories. It is not yet a clothes hanger, and really, I don't expect it to be. I don't know my BMI.

We recently got a juicer, and at least 4 days a week I am having a fruit/veggie smoothie in the morning. I have cut almost all of the low quality foods out of my life, but I still have a way to go.

I would call myself better than average, but not by much.

I'm sorry - I thought this thread was about recipes for Fronkeys - my bad!

I suppose the reason that so few fronkeys have been spotted in Bavaria is that some so called missing links with hyperextensible claws may have eaten them all from the "Original Early Bird" menus. You might be the first to have feathers but please there is no need to get them all in a flap.!!

Are atheists for healthy than theists? That could be an interesting study. A theory, since atheists are more about ideas than self image, we might be less attached to our weight and posible bad habits, and more willing to change our eating and activity behaviers. If we value health, as an idea, we might be more willing to take the needed steps to actualize it.

Of course, if you are a guilt ridden ex-theist, to you might be on a death spiral. Always looking for security or medication via food/drink/drugs/alcohol, killing the liver, kidneys, brain cells, and GI track.

I for one know that I have one life to live and therefore I am trying to get into the best shape of my life.

Check out Rush Limbaugh.  He’s fat, deaf, smokes cigars, sits on his ass all day, is a drug addict, is in his fourth marriage (so far), spews hate daily, and is a Christian.

Me?  I’m a champion marathoner who has been keeping fit all my  life.  Unlike Rush, I am, at 77,  trim; have all my senses working perfectly; don’t drink or smoke; am constantly active; don’t do ANY drugs; don’t rage in hatred for women and minorities; and don’t believe Christ ever existed.

I can’t, of course, speak for other atheists, especially since I don’t know any.

@Morgan I have heard that Theists can suffer from probllems with their knees from searching for that second life.

@ Dale keep it lit !!
