Thanks very much for the comments and support.
It did get published, and I had two very positive responses, and one response from a pastor telling me that I was "crying out for God's love". I was pleasantly surprised!
Someone cut the letter out and posted it in our staff room with many red exclamation points and the word "lies" written on it. Initially I was upset, but then I decided that it wasn't worth getting upset over another person's intolerance. The back and forth letters went on for another week, and then I guess the editor decided that enough was enough! No-one has approached me with comments, but two coworkers have begun ignoring me totally.
It was not nearly as bad as I had expected.

Well, my letter has taken on a new life once again! The paper reprinted the whole discussion and every letter written in a section set aside for Community Faith discussion.
I guess a "whole lot" of my coworkers read it this time! So I am most definitely out of the closet now :)

Another amazing resurrected post for the Easter Sunday Morning Service, wow, that was a wonderful letter you wrote to your paper. The reactions from your coworkers is something I probably would have trouble dealing with so major kudos to you for not letting it bother you too much. I feel like announcing publicly that I'm an atheist somewhere/somehow now... but idk where/how. Lol. I do have this great urge to announce my atheism to all my relatives that I'll be seeing when I go to my cousin's Bar Mitzvah at the end of this month... but idk if my dad and brother would want to be outed as atheists, so it might get complicated, plus given that the reason we're meeting is religious it might get awkward LOL. I definitely do want to mention it at some point if possible, though. I hate that no one knows that I'm an atheist except my online friends and my dad and brother. Granted I don't have any close friends in real life - my closest friends I only know through the internet, and I really do talk to them every day and have close relationships with them. I don't usually give these friendships enough credit, they are real, and I shouldn't act like I "have no friends" lol. Still... when it comes to real life, I feel like I have nothing to be ashamed of and yet am afraid of how people will react just the same. But at the same time in real life I feel like I should be exclaiming "I'm an atheist" at every corner and seeing what happens. I feel like that'd be fun. Since I doubt I'll ever start doing that... writing a letter to a newspaper, like you did, might be a more realistic goal to set for myself.

Thank you, luvtheheaven, trust me, it is always surprising who gets upset and who accepts it.
I am 100 % out of the atheist closet now, and have replied to several more "letters to the Editor"
Now that coworkers ,family and friends all know that" I think Atheist", things have quieted down considerably!
