This week on Think Atheist Radio we have our chat with Dr. Rebecca Goldstein! Dr. Goldstein graduated summa cum laude from Barnard College, where she received the Montague Prize for Excellence in Philosophy, then received her PhD in Philosophy from Princeton University. While working for her PhD she was awarded both the National Science Foundation Fellowship and the Whiting Foundation Fellowship. She has taught courses in philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology, and more. Dr. Goldstein is the recipient of numerous
awards for her work including the National Jewish Book Award, the Edward Lewis Wallant Award, the National Jewish Book Honor Award, and the Macarthur Foundation's "Genius Award". An author of several books, her unique practice has often been to communicate philosophical principles and ideas within a fiction novel. Her titles include The Mind-Body Problem; Betraying Spinoza: The Renegade Jew who Gave Us Modernity; Incompleteness: The Proof and Paradox of Kurt Gödel; and more. Her latest book is 36 Arguments for the Existence of God: A Work of Fiction. We talked to Dr. Goldstein to talk to us about her process of communicating philosophical ideas through novels, about atheist communities, about the arguments for and against God, and much more! Listen up!
Neil Armstrong, first person on the Moon, has died at 82. The Telegraph and The Guardian have good tributes, but the best is The Economist's. Do read the Armstrong family's statement as well. Buzz Aldrin had something to say on the news of Mr. Armstrong's passing too. Watch those first steps and reflect. Martin Robbins pointed out that no one born after 1935 has stepped on another world, that it's time to stop screwing around, that it's time to go to Mars.

It's official. A group of cognitive neuroscientists, neuropharmacologiests, neurophysiologists, neuroanatomist and computational neuroscientists have gotten together and signed the Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness. The declaration states that there is no reason to think that humans are not unique in possessing consciousness and that mammals, birds, octopuses too, are possess consciousness too. Here's a bit more on the inclusion of the octopus. PZ Myers has some questions about this. Does self awareness require a complex brain?
Steven Novella addressed some steaming nonsense from Deepak Chopra (more???), this time on the "nocebo effect", the opposite of the placebo effect.

Atheism+? Chances are you're going to be reading about this for at least a little while. It started here with Jen McCreight suggesting that the atheist movement is in need of a new direction. Jen followed up the next day to dub the new direction "Atheism+" or "Atheism Plus", and to expand on her thoughts from the previous day. Greta Christina is on board, explaining why Atheism+ is good for atheism. Richard Carrier explains why he's for it. Heina at Skepchick listed 5 reasons she thinks a person should be interested in Atheism+. Kylie Sturgess asked whether it's important that she be labeled as an Atheist+ if she's already doing everything entailed by Atheism+. Ashley Miller asked and answered the question of how Atheism+ differs from Humanism. Greta Christina also wrote to differentiate Atheism+ and Humanism. Alonzo Fyfe posted with some arguments and concerns and wondered if he may be disqualified from Atheism+. Adam Lee wrote on some myths and truths about Atheism+. McCreight herself followed up to dispel some misconceptions about Atheism+.

Comment by Tom Margolis on August 26, 2012 at 8:42am "Martin Robbins pointed out that no one born after 1935 has stepped on another world, that it's time to stop screwing around, that it's time to go to Mars."
I find it odd that a web site devoted to rational thought would promote a sentiment as irrational as the above. What is the point of going to Mars? It's inspiring? Exciting? Moving? Fulfilling? It would yield data about the evolution of life ... on Mars? It would generate spin-off technologies?
Spin-off technologies can also be generated by projects to develop alternate energy sources, efficient desalinization techniques, cheap and portable water-purification devices for remote regions, biodegradable building materials, disease and mental-health treatments, sustainable agriculture and aquaculture, non-toxic pesticides, brain-regeneration therapies ... There are countless ambitious projects which can provide inspiration and excitement, can generate spin-off technologies, and can yield useful scientific data while directly addressing pressing problems here on Earth. A mission to Mars mostly makes us feel good.
I challenge the Think Atheist community to provide rational - not emotional - reasons to dump money into space travel, and to show that such an investment could *not* be better used on our own planet.

People are lazy, particularly the common theistic believer, and not interested in the drawn out explanations offered by science. It requires more thought and reasoning than they're willing to invest. God is a much easier explanation. Although one would think the most potentially important subject they will ever consider would warrant substantial investigation. Which leads me to think that many theists probably are not genuinely religious.
Comment by Ed on August 26, 2012 at 10:54am @ Tom
The huge financial investments of space exploration can be hard to justify when considered against the pressing global problems our species faces here on earth. Elimination of war, famine, and disease should always be a top priority but there I go again being overly pragmatic. If we discover a large asteroid collision is in our not too distant future then the financial investment to go interstellar might be a no brainer.
Comment by Henry Ruddle on August 26, 2012 at 11:18am The study about atheists bargaining with unknown entities seems bogus to me. The test was described as a computer game. Games have their own rules and reality, and clearly the atheist participants were just playing along. As usual, Hemant was spot on regarding not counting church tithes as charitable donations. Churches use 90-95% of the money they receive for overhead, which is the nearly the opposite of most true charities.
Comment by Greg Gorey on August 26, 2012 at 12:08pm Tom,
There are entire books written arguing all of the benefits of space travel. Robert Zubrin's The Case for Mars and Neil DeGrasse Tyson's The Space Chronicles are just two. If you decide to buy either, please use this link and help support us for no additional charge.
Comment by Gary Bergeron on August 26, 2012 at 12:27pm Although a manned mission to Mars would be a monumental human achievement, I think at our present stage of technology, unmanned vehicles produce more bang for the buck.
Comment by wyocowboy50 on August 26, 2012 at 5:21pm thanks loved it!!!!
All good, until the climate change had to be there again. Nothing to do with atheism, of course.
However, I will say one little thing: the title "Arctic sea ice set to hit record low" would be a bit less impactful if it had continued with "...since the records began in 1979", now, wouldn't it?
