My job as a cashier is soon to expire. Part of my job is to act over-friendly and smile in an life's-just-peachy-I'm-on-happy-pills sort of way. I was checking out this lady and her old mother and was being friendly and chatty. They had already paid and were about to leave and the old mother said something like "Trust God. That's the most important thing isn't it?" I feel like a coward because I said "I suppose." I can't disagree and get into an argument with them because other people are waiting in line. However, I hate the fact that people can make statements like that their whole life and think that everybody's in agreement with them. They've never been seriously challenged or even seriously considered the fact that they might be fundamentally wrong. Many religious people have said "Oh, I've had my doubts." But I really doubt that they've had serious doubts.

I think it is alright to say "Oh I am not a religious person, but I know how a lot of people find that important".  You aren't saying it is important to you, but you are recognizing that others find it important and that makes it come across as more sociable and less of a threat to oppose.

But don't feel bad about saying "I suppose".  Figuring out what to do in the situation is hard when you are on the spot.

Or, just a smile and a, "You have a nice day!" couldn't hurt either.

"I suppose" is pretty mild compared to my other ideas. Best I could come up with was a smile and "You too", but my face doesn't lie very well, so my eyes might roll and we both might have to feel puzzled for a moment. Put a fist on my head and say "Tebow!". I don't know, maybe I'm just going through some kind of phase, right now. I wonder, what would Jack Black do?

Me, I would have just smiled and nodded and turned to vomit in the cash register. I really need to learn how to deal better.

How about, "You talkin' to me?"

Just say "Yes, I trust the most high and important god of Thor every hour of every day and to infinity and beyond" (or change Thor to whichever god it is on that day and end with a silly big smile) hahaha   I wish I could think on my feet like this, but I would of probably said something just as vague  :)  Have fun with people, they might even enjoy it too :)

I’ve had this experience often.  I just smile in a way that makes it clear I think they’re looney and say nothing.  That usually ends it.  But if they persist, they are in for an ear-burning.  I do the same with my friend who believes in ouija boards.

"Oh that's so funny, I just talked to Him this morning! He's going to give me a new car next week!"
