I was chatting to a guy yesterday and religion came up in conversation. The usual "so what religion are you?" question was asked by him and I said I was not religious. He was not sure what I meant by 'not religious' so I told him that I was an atheist and did not believe that there was a god and that all religions are made by man.

This is when it got interesting, he said - "Oh, so you listen to heavy metal and stuff..."??? HUH??

For the first time (or one of the very few) I was actually really stumped by his question. Not because it was a good question * of course* but just at how immense the ignorance was behind it.

I know that the words atheist or atheism can be quite loaded with generalisations and connotations to the religious folk, so I'd like to hear what some of the funniest and absurd ones you have heard linked with atheism?

I think that the images portrayed by most, if not all, heavy metal artists have a lot to do with this poor soul's misguided statement. They all portray a very dark, angry image to the world, but if you listen to their music for a bit it's easy to see why. It has a very angry sound and, often, very angry lyrics. Can you see a heavy metal band wanting to portray rainbows and flowers? It would be absurd; oh, and they would never attract any fans. LOL. Couple this dark image with the  unfortunate but true fact that most religious people equate atheism with Satanism and, taadaa! Now, in the minds of people like the one mentioned in the OP, all atheist are really Satanists, so therefore they must listen to heavy metal. Because it's the "devil's music".

Yes, equating atheism with Satanism is absurd if you really take the time to think about it. Satan, if you truly are a Satanist, would be your "god", right? How can a person who does not believe in any gods turn around and believe in Satan? How did people come by this generalization?

I think their confusion lies in the fact that their preachers and other religious leaders have taught them that anyone who says they don't believe in god is the tool of the devil - whether they are conscious of it or not. People take teachings like this, mull them around in their minds, and then come to the conclusion that atheists are Satanic, therefore they must worship Satan.

A person who is a Satanist will most likely tell you that they are a Satanist, at least from my experience. They are not going to waste anyone's time beating around the bush, saying they are atheist. I have known only 2 people in my life who actually claim to be Satanists, and they were really just looking to portray a certain, dark image. I don't think they actually believe in Satan. Ironically, they are both heavy metal musicians.

I am a bass player in an eclectic band and we play just about every type of music that you can imagine EXCEPT for heavy metal. LOL. I am also a fabric and multimedia artist, so that blows the whole "atheists can't be artists" theory out of the water.

My personal favorite generalization about atheism is the fact that no one religious can wrap their mind around the fact that a person who is not a believer can be a "good" person. I am nice to just about everyone I see; I help people who need my help, I give to charity, I bend over backwards to help the less fortunate whenever I can, my band plays charity events left and right, etc. - and I wish I had a $5 spot for every time someone has told me that the world needs more "good, Christian souls" like me. LMAO. It's actually a very sweet irony.

Peace.

Like others, I think the stupidest thing is when people equate atheism with Satanism.  Satanism and CHRISTIANITY have more in common than do Satanism and atheism.  It's just so ridiculous.  If one worships "Satan"--a Christian creation by the way--that is a form of theism, not atheism.

I've also had people express surprise that I'm an atheist because I'm "so nice" and have morals and values..arghhhhhh!!

I'm still researching it Gayle, but I believe that the concept of Satan originated in Egypt - Horus was the good son of Ra, the Egyptian Sun God, and Set was Horus' evil brother. The Jewish religious leaders plagiarized most of their religion, both Old and New Testaments, from other cultures.

The Cain and Able story may have come from there as well, as Set killed Horus, hacked him to pieces, and scattered those pieces all over the earth so they could never reunite.

arc, just a minor comment: It's Abel not Able as far as I know.

You're right - it's those flying fingers, sometimes they get so far ahead of me I can't see what I'm saying --

"Like others, I think the stupidest thing is when people equate atheism with Satanism."

This is in part why the present day church of Satan (started, I believe, by someone named LaVey) is so irritating to me in spite of the fact that a lot of the "doctrine" makes some degree of sense.  Stuff I could tolerate a hell of a lot better than Xianity is being labeled by its proponents as satanic!  Here, let's just hand the god-tards a free point in the debate.

(e.g, According to the wikipedia article, the nine "satanic sins" are:

  1. Stupidity
  2. Pretentiousness
  3. Solipsism
  4. Self-deceit
  5. Herd Conformity
  6. Lack of Perspective
  7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies
  8. Counterproductive Pride
  9. Lack of Aesthetics

And honestly I can't really claim anything on that list isn't actually bad.
