I have thought about this in great length. However, there is a huge problem with this. Why would a company spend millions of dollars on research to develops something when, as soon as they finally figure it out, every other company in the world could copy their hard earned design and make it so cheap they couldn't recoup research and development cost? Every company would just sit around waiting for things to be invented to steal the idea instead of doing the costly development themselves and therefore development would cease. 

The idea is great in theory, but not practice. Perhaps we need more things like nasa where all their inventions are free to anyone. But nasa is not out to make money because it is government funded.
