Noticing all these things recently.

Since coming out last year to my family about being an Atheist I have noticed that there have been more then obvious increases in their religious behavior every time I'm around them.

For intense, my mother busted out her Bible, which has been at the bottom of a box in the back of her closet for the past 15 years. It now decorates the living room coffee table.

My oldest sister has suddenly discovered that she has taste for any and all angel paintings. So much so that she haphazardly hangs throughout her house. It's almost like she shoved everything already on her walls over throughout the house just so she could squeeze in an angel here and there.

My father miraculously uncovered revelations and apparently the anti Christ, Obama, is preparing us and the end of the world in nigh. He knows it makes me mad when he brings it up which is why it’s a reoccurring topic with him just about ever damned time he calls me.

My oldest brother whom the closest thing to religious that he's owned was the cross on his Gun's N Roses t-shirt now decorates his home with tiny wooden Jesus riding crosses above each and every door. Even the bathroom….

My adoring aunt who either has a preacher under her sink or she’s been investing in bulk orders holy water, that she lovingly tosses on me from time to time. Unfortunately she has to come up with a new tactic because I now deliberately wear a rain coat when ever she’s going to be around. Hehe, the raincoat even has a little image of a devil on the back.

Now recently my middle sister decided that the whole family should have a group outing... to form stronger bonds and all that warm fuzzy goodness that comes along with family outings… Yeah, by getting re-baptized again. What a JOY is that!

Ahhhh, Family!

Hi, Tammy,I'm sure their behaviour will calm down once they realise that it's not going to change the way you feel.I think the best thing you can do is just act like it doesn't bother you & treat your family as you usually would before you told them you were atheist.

I honestly think it has less to do with their religion than it does with insecurity that you're going your own way & they may think they're going to lose you somehow.

That said, it doesn't take away from the fact that they're being ridiculous lol, and I wish you good luck with their efforts :)

Putting a bible out is an invitation! Pick it up, choose an absurd verse or a several and discuss.

I love reading stuff like this, it's better than fiction for me.  Thanks for sharing this!

@Robert McBean, my family is all fundies, can't wait to see how that turns out when I come out.  I'd like to do it at Christmas I think.  Might as well do it right or not at all my father always says.

Next time you get attacked by holy water pretend that it hurts and that you are burning up. Then run and tell people that she threw acid at you. I like your attitude. Unbreakable.

My. god. Really?? You're not serious? Your aunt is tossing water on you? And here I was going to complain because my mom is going to visit soon and I'm dreading the moment where we find ourselves embroiled in a religious argument.

Next time they are needling you on your stance, point all those things out to them.  Have them reflect on the people they were before you came out.  How far away from god they were.  Then have them look at themselves now!  They should be overwhelmed with their before and after photo!  And it was you that did this!  They would probably be damned to hell if not for you, their wonderful daughter and sister.

Re Robert Karp's suggestion:  Ezekiel, chapter 23 is a gold mine (or perhaps better described as a quite full septic tank), especially verse 20.

"For intense, my mother busted out her Bible, which has been at the bottom of a box in the back of her closet for the past 15 years. It now decorates the living room coffee table."

Perhaps go over the atrocities, scientific errors, and contradictions with her.

"My oldest sister has suddenly discovered that she has taste for any and all angel paintings. So much so that she haphazardly hangs throughout her house. It's almost like she shoved everything already on her walls over throughout the house just so she could squeeze in an angel here and there."

You should remind her of "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth"

"My father miraculously uncovered revelations and apparently the anti Christ, Obama, is preparing us and the end of the world in nigh."

Perhaps point out all the failed end of the world predictions- http://www.religioustolerance.org/end_wrl2.htm

46 failed end-of-the-world predictions that were to occur between 30 & 1920 CE, but didn't

"My oldest brother whom the closest thing to religious that he's owned was the cross on his Gun's N Roses t-shirt now decorates his home with tiny wooden Jesus riding crosses above each and every door."

Ah, the lovely cross-  you should order an electric chair charm or necklace

Have fun with the water and outings.

And finally, the good old- "do you believe in Zeus?  When you understand why you don't believe in Zeus, you will understand why I don't believe in your imaginary god."

My Mom and sister did the same.  My Mom took my name off all her bank accounts because now I would steal her money.  Yes, very sad.  My sister started calling herself Holy Roman Catholic, everything she knew about religion, I taught her.

My family has done the same. Hour long discussions on all of it, it was so weird how they changed when I came out to them. They are liberal and I thought they would be understanding but I was way wrong. I had to tell them to stop it or I would just leave. Half worked for me I guess. Noticed lots of extra bible quotes handwritten on the refrigerator and stuff, pictures of saints and crosses and what not. It will get better hopefully
