What do people mean when they say that they're "spiritual, not religious"? (I hope this hasn't been addressed already)

Is there a relevant distinction, or have they simplified an old idea?

The people that I know that are "spiritual" say that they believe in god, the supernatural, blah, blah, but don't go to church or agree with the teachings of the organized religions.
