Muslim Woman Beaten to Death in Hate Crime (California)

This is a very sick and cruel thing that happened. I can't understand why people would hate someone this much.

I'm soooo NOT trying to take away from what happened to this poor girls mother, but one thing that caught my attention was what she said around the 2 minute mark.

"You're someone without a religion."

Well, if the details are correct, including the note, then it would seem unlikely that the person who committed the crime was 'pious' in any way.  That being said, lacking piety does not an Atheist make.  The criminal sounds like a racist, plain and simple, and there is no rational or religious justification for such hatred - I know the holy books espouse racism in a Bronze Age sense but only theists who are already racist (particularly white supremacist) manage to stretch that into justification for racial hatred in a modern world.)

A horrible crime that those of us who value human life condemn - without a need to invoke religion.

But religion and/or race may have relevance here (and I might venture to say whomever did this might call themselves a patriotic, god fearing/loving American (Judeo-Christian god) - but that's just a guess).  Regardless, some ideology was at play here- likely a combination of racism and religion.

Unfortunately, in her grief, she expressed a belief that I understand Muslims have about atheists or any nonbelievers.  That we are the worst of humanity.  In some Muslim countries you will be killed if you say you do not believe in any god.    I feel sorry for the family's tragedy but she really believes that a godless person did this.

Personally I don't think most Muslims - those living in middle eastern near-theocracies and theocracies - can even understand what an Atheist is.  "Not believing" means rejecting the belief that murder is bad, honesty is important for civilization, and is a total rejection of civilization since that is the only basis upon which they've ever known civilization to stand.

Actually, just to add to that - I really have difficulty perceiving the slightest bit of sincerity in this woman.  I know she must have been through hell getting out of Iraq in the early 90's, so I would expect her to react/behave differently than the average North American - but honestly, if you told me this was an actress trying out for a part in which her mother was beaten to near death, I would tell you that she was a terrible actress.  Seriously, she does not seem shaken at all, and seems desperate to convince the listener of her narrative.

The tissue is like an amateur prop - all that 'crying' and it's perfectly dry - why does she even have it?

Yeah she doesn't seem sincere at all
