I replied to a thread a bit ago and told a story about my experience in the late 1970s/early 1980s in dealing with aggressive xians from penecostal megachurches - both adults and teens. Here's the story I told...
I became an "out of the closet atheist" in High School, in suburban/rural GA (well, at the time it was ;) ). There was a group of us "geeks" who were into politics, heavy metal, and Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D).
There was a teen church group called Alpha, which was a part of the Chapel Hill Harvester Church down here - one of the first "megachurches" in the nation, and also one with a ton of scandals (look up "Bishop Earl Paulk" for some juicy reading). Anyway, the Alphas staged a big ol' book/album burning - their targets being the "Satanic" AD&D, plus pretty much every heavy metal band out then (e.g. Motley Crue, Guns n Roses, Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, etc.).
Well, I couldn't let this go unchallenged. I was such an aggressive asshole back then ;)
I (and a couple others) went there, blairing "Highway to Hell" from my VW microbus, all wearing AD&D shirts - one of us with the Dungeon Master's Guide cover on the front, one with the Player's Handbook, and mine - the most "demonic" - the Deities and Demigods cover (and I still have my FIRST EDITION!). There were local news crews there, and they captured me being called a "Satan Worshiper" a "Demonically Possessed Boy", and a ton of other crap. I told them they were "insane", "on a witch hunt", "hateful", "close minded", "sheep", etc.
I have to admit I loved being called a "Satan Worshiper" in the local news :)
So yeah - people back then and to this day, still think that the music you listen to, the books you read, or the games you play make you a Satanist.
** Let me clarify "aggressive asshole" - I ask you, what male teen with a cause and a Napoleon complex (I'm a towering 5'5") isn't? ;)
There were some other, not so public, run-ins I encountered as well - from HS to this day. I'm not the asshole I was back then, but I'm still as steady and adamant to stand up for my right to believe as I want without persecution, and for others as well (atheist or not).
So my question is this - have any of you experienced anything similar - long ago or today? Tell your story!
