I stumbled across the following wiki at Wikipedia and thought it very interesting. I copy it here for your convenience. Full wiki links are also provided.

Over at bigthink.com, there's a short article called "Acid Flashback, With Nostalgia

Free Will and the Bible
Some assert that man has free will. Some assert that all is determined. Some say (as I do) that free will is compatible with determinism. The debate has raged, unabated, for millennia.
Clearly, an interceding God presents problems for free will. However, a cosmic God - a Creator who does not intervene in human affairs - might be compatible with free will if he keeps his omniscience and omnipotence to himself. I,… Continue

An ambitious blog title, I know . . . but you be the judge.
From his high-rise Miami condo, an aspiring photographer sees dark clouds gathering in the distance. He remembers that a thunderstorm had been forecast for the evening. He sets up his camera and tripod on the balcony, checks the battery in his remote control, and waits for lightning.
A young couple have 10% of their paychecks automatically deposited into a savings account… Continue

Determinism Versus Free Will: The Difference is Options
In the determinism versus free will debate, determinists believe causality and choice are mutually exclusive – while compatibilists believe they are intimately intertwined. I will attempt to present a rational argument for my particular brand of compatibilism. Mine is a unique (I can’t find my central tenet repeated by anybody else on the Internet) and forceful argument that explains how free will is compatible… Continue

I'm cross-posting this piece in the Rational Integrity group forum
In atheist forum discussions about free will, determinists overwhelmingly outnumber compatibilists (those who say free will is compatible with determinism).
As I'll explain below, what always strikes me as curious is how dogma, denial and simplistic faith seem to be shared by both religious… Continue

Don't worry. This post will not list and define the many types of logical fallacies that exist. I’m not expert enough for that and I’m too lazy to Google the research necessary. What I hope to do is describe some observations about logical fallacies garnered from blogs and forums from around the Internet.
Logical fallacies have a legitimate function in formal debate. If you can persuade your audience and win your point with an invalid argument, then good for you. You’re a clever dude… Continue

My stepson is a devout Catholic. It bothers him that I have an atheist website and a presence on several atheist forums. He has an account on my member forum, at AtheistExile.com, and follows the conversations there as a lurker instead of a participant.
He told me I should try prayer, just for a little while, to see if they come true or not.
I never approach my family members on the subject of religion but if they approach me about it, I don't hold back unless I see them… Continue

Nature is, as Alfred Lord Tennyson said, “red in tooth and claw”. It has no morals. Morality is a human construct that usually reflects our social norms. As such, morality is formed by an amalgam of influences from family, religion, culture, evolution and the arts. This amalgam of influences varies from person to person and is relative to our exposure to, and experience with, these influences.
Almost half the human race subscribes to a religion that claims morality is objective… Continue

The following is from a discussion, elsewhere, about Islam. Johnny, is confusing Muslims with Islam and is concerned about hatred in the world. My response clarifies my position about as well as I've ever clarified it, so I'm posting the exchange here in my blog.
@ Atheist Exile
First, there is a rational justification for not hating anyone. One day I think we can eliminate hate if we don't blow up the earth first.
Second, I… Continue

Did anybody watch the Intelligence Squared debate, on the BBC News channel, yesterday? There's a video of Christopher Hitchens, at the debate, below, at the bottom of this post. The Catholics got trounced by the atheists. I’ve been waiting for the transcript but, so far, none has materialized. So I gathered the stats instead.
Before I continue, I should describe the Intelligence Squared debate format. Each debate has a proposition. In this case, the proposition is: “The Catholic… Continue

I just ran across this essay from the eminent ex-Muslim, Ali Sina: the founder of FaithFreedom International. It expresses my own feelings on the subject better than I could. Note: I edited the essay for grammatical errors (Ali Sina is an Iranian and English is his second language).
The Problem is Islam, not Muslims
By Ali Sina
We have to make a distinction between Muslims and Islam. Muslims are people, human beings like… Continue

This amazing summary of our latest understanding of cosmology, by Lawrence Kraus, will blow your mind. It's what the majority of physicists now believe about the universe. It's the most informative hour I've ever spent in my life. You've GOT to see… Continue

In my previous blog entry, I posted the first half of a lengthy article that starts off (ostensibly) scientific, then degenerates into New Age subjects like ESP and other "psychic phenomena". I cut out the less-than-scientific parts.
This blog entry posts (by request) the last half of the article. To appreciate the second half, below, you'll really need to read the first half as well.
More than that, some believe it may solve some mysteries… Continue

This is an old article I saved about a decade ago. Because of the impression it made on me, it's managed to survive one PC after another and is still on my hard drive (I just happened upon it, again, a few minutes ago). It's a pretty cool idea and pretty thought provoking. Not that I buy into everything it says . . .

There was a fascinating article, by Eugenie Samuel, at NewScientist.com. It explains an experiment in which they stopped light dead in its tracks, then released it, letting it speed off, as usual.
Stop Light: The REAL Spin Doctors
Scientists have stopped light in its tracks in two landmark experiments. In doing so they have overcome a… Continue
