There are regular “God told me to do it” stories in the news. For the purposes of this discussion I am creating a fictional one. It may seem too long to read but I think it is necessary as the points raised by it are important.
Richard is an Evangelical pastor who comes home from Sunday services to dinner with his wife and 12-year old son. They live an idyllic life in a small rural Christian…Continue
What is the difference between believing that a god actually exists and a delusion?
If someone can give me a reasonable answer I might be willing to change my understanding of reality.
Before I get to the questions I would like to suggest that one of the biggest predictors of a person’s religion is geography. A person born and raised in Alabama is most likely to become a Christian while a person born and raised in Riyadh is most likely to become a Muslim and in India a 95% chance of being a Hindu.
I recently spoke with a Hindu who has very little knowledge of Christianity and even less of Catholicism. We were discussing religious beliefs and I was asked to explain…Continue
The term comes from the world of English soccer and refers to the final stages of a competition when it is still all to play for and the tension prevents anyone from relaxing in their seats.
I have followed the U.S. election from the start. Here in Ireland the main (only) topic of…Continue
Every few months for the last 8 years I get a visit from 2 or 3 Jehovah Witnesses. One of them is the same guy from day one and he likes to bring the “new recruits” along so that they “see a real live atheist”. He thinks that he is teaching them debating skills and I will give him some credit for that. He is rather good at it but not quite a W.L. Craig. I suppose we improve each other’s skillset to a certain degree.
It can be funny sometimes. If I know they are calling I will…Continue
Is it irony to say that it is ironic how often the word irony is misused?
I help out manning information tables for Atheist Ireland when I can. They are starting to become a regular monthly feature in our bigger cities. The one in Dublin has been operational for three years without a break. While there is competition for prime locations, we have managed to keep our own regular spot on the capital’s main thoroughfare.
Recently a Palestine solidarity group set up a table to our…Continue
Are you a theist that would like me to convert to your religion? I will happily become a Christian or a Muslim if you can describe your God to me and offer me some objective evidence as to why I should trust what you are telling me to be true.
When I say “evidence” I mean even a tiny scrap of something that is tangible, that exists outside of your mind. I am not asking for, or even expecting any “Proofs”. Just something I could later build upon as my understanding of your (my) God…Continue
Today Ireland has become the first country in the world to vote for Marriage Equality for all of it citizens irrespective of their sexual orientation.
The people were asked in a referendum to add a line to our Constitution that reads as follows:
‘Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their…Continue
This is a title of an etching by Francisco Goya. “The Sleep of Reason brings forth Monsters” Christopher Hitchens has the picture on the inside cover of his book “God is not Great”. I only discovered this recently as I have only ever known the book as an audio book. It was a serendipitous discovery for me as I have had those same Spanish words…Continue
I’m scared of dreams….
I am walking in a house and then some snipers stand
in a circle around me.
They shoot me!
One shoots me here and one shoots me here
And then one shoots me here.
I remember we used to walk around everywhere
and buy ice cream.
We would eat, shop, go everywhere.
You go past the checkpoints to the market.
You walk that way.
You see crowds of people.
There’s the ice…Continue
Pope Squeaky Clean and some new recruits released two “doves of peace” in the Vatican and they got attacked by a seagull and a black crow. The audience should have prayed harder.…Continue
As I went to tidy up my old Sunday School Bookmarks I thought I would post a random selection of them from the last few years. Thanks Nelson for all the work you have put in to bringing us these weekly links.Continue

Here is a very good lecture hosted by Brian Cox. It gives a very good explanation of how the Universe works. It also explains how Science and the Scientific Method work. The lecture was hosted before the discovery of the Higgs particle but that does not take from it as it only emphasises how the scientific method really does works. It covers quantum mechanics and Relativity in easy terms. Allow an hour to watch. Time well spent.…Continue

I have over the last few years steadily lost respect for William Lane Craig as an apologist. His voice grates on my ears more and more. His willingness to accept genocide as acceptable because his god commanded it is pathetic and I have shook my head in bewilderment at the acceptance such statements get from his herd of followers. So when I saw this video I said to myself “Don’t do it man, you will only get annoyed”. Of…Continue
It was recently reported here that the Atheist Census website was down due to a cyber-attack. It is back online now so please everyone sign it. It will only that a minute. It is currently at almost 18,000. Go on you know you want to.
Sometimes you think about something and then keep noticing it popping up everywhere. So anyway I was recently pondering in a not to serious manner if there were any links between Atheism and fitness and in particular obesity. Then I heard a DJ on a radio talk show comment that it was quite likely that Atheists were unfit and overweight because they probably have not much concern about the future. You know the way we don’t have a positive outlook on life because we are so miserable all the…Continue

I am sure most of us know the story of Malala Yousefzai who was shot by the Taliban for advocating education for girls. News.
Malala has dedicated her childhood to championing education for girls like her in Pakistan. As she lies in a hospital bed, a tragic victim of Taliban gunmen, let's help make her dream come true.
One part of Pakistan has already started a…Continue
This is a review of Christopher Hitchens last book – Mortality. He brilliantly describes his ‘year of living dyingly’. I would like to make it clear now that this writing is not mine. It is copied entirely from the book review section of the Irish Times. It is written by John Banville whose books share the same shelf…Continue
It has been reported that Ireland is now in the top ten for people claiming to be “convinced atheists”. We are still in a minority but this is great news. There is also another story of the failure of a recent recruitment drive by the Catholics to find any replacement priests. So as the majority of the diehard Catholics are over 60, the ratio of Atheists to theists should increase again. All good news to my ears. Teach, don't preach.…Continue
