Setting: a college chemistry exam.
Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So… Continue

Atheists and agnostics are the only two groups of people in the US against whom discrimination is not only expected, but acceptable.
A black man may become president. A woman may become president. In short just about anybody may become president, but I guarantee that, in my lifetime, an person refuses to profess a faith in God will never achieve the nation's highest office.
As an atheist, I believe that a Muslim has a greater… Continue

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah's growing tourism industry and the star-studded Sundance Film Festival are being targeted for a boycott by bloggers, gay rights activists and others seeking to punish the Mormon church for its aggressive promotion of California's ban on gay marriage.
It could be a heavy price to pay. Tourism brings in $6 billion a year to Utah, with world-class skiing, a spectacular red rock country and the film festival founded by Robert Redford, among other popular tourist… Continue

A atheist friend brought this up and I thought I would share it. "Atheists need to come up with a fake religion and convince hundreds of thousands of people to join it. When we gain hundreds of religious members, we pull the curtain and let everyone that joined know that it was all made up, and show people how easy it is to be convinced to live a certain reality, even if that reality is not real. Just a thought."

Atheist adverts declaring "there's probably no God" could be placed on buses across the country after a fundraising drive made five times the target amount in just one day.
Even religious groups donated money to the cause in the belief that the campaign, highlighted in The Daily Telegraph, would encourage people to think more about faith and could actually enhance support for Christianity.
Organisers needed to raise just £2,750 from supporters in order to pay for adverts… Continue

"YOU cannot overestimate," thundered psychiatrist Jeffrey Schwartz, "how threatened the scientific establishment is by the fact that it now looks like the materialist paradigm is genuinely breaking down. You're gonna hear a lot in the next calendar year about... how Darwin's explanation of how human intelligence arose is the only scientific way of doing it... I'm asking us as a world community to go out there and tell the scientific establishment, enough is enough! Materialism needs to start… Continue

Originally considered a dud, an old volcano-in-a-bottle experiment designed to mimic the conditions that may have given rise to life may have been right on target.
After reanalyzing the results of unpublished research conducted by Stanley Miller in 1953, chemists realized that his experiment had actually produced a wealth of amino acids — the protein foundation of life.
Miller is famed for the results of experiments on amino… Continue

I used to nod wisely when people said: "Let's discuss issues rather than personalities." It seemed so obvious that in politics an issue was an issue and a personality was a personality, and that the more one could separate the two, the more serious one was. After all, in a debate on serious issues, any mention of the opponent's personality would be ad hominem at best and at worst would stoop as low as ad feminam.
At my old English… Continue

Why do so many people believe in God?
St. Augustine thought he knew the answer.
“You have created us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find rest in you.”
But since the Darwinian revolution and the human genome project, biologists increasingly have suggested another answer: Natural selection and genetics have hard-wired us for religious belief.
After all, we attribute everything… Continue

MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) — The largest group of atheists and agnostics in the United States is suing President George W. Bush, the governor of Wisconsin and other officials over a federal law designating a National Day of Prayer.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation sued Friday in U.S. district court, arguing that the president's mandated proclamations calling on Americans to pray violates a constitutional ban on government officials… Continue

No doubt many of us have all experienced a situation where, after long hours of trying to solve a certain problem, we give up, and go get a break, only to come back and solve the problem within moments. This appears to be a somewhat commonplace situation. However, the science behind it is much more complex.
According to the authors of the study – Professor Adam Galinsky of the Kellogg School of Management, Chen-Bo Zhong from the… Continue

(PhysOrg.com) -- By comparing the genomes of humans and five other mammals, Cornell researchers have identified 544 genes that have been shaped by positive selection over millions of years of evolution.
"To our knowledge this is the largest and most comprehensive analysis of positive selection to date," write the researchers in the Aug. 1 issue of the journal PLoS Genetics, reporting on research mainly funded by the National… Continue

“Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumb-nail.” - Henry David Thoreau
I use these “hacks” myself (in this case, “hacks” refers to workarounds or tricks to reach your goal), and I’ve found them to be effective in many cases. Please note that you might have read some of these once or twice (or thrice) on this blog before, but I thought it… Continue

I cannot rail against that which I disbelieve. I can only rail against the actions of those who use their belief as motivation to infringe on my rights.
Many times, more vocal believers who misunderstand what ‘disbelief’ entails, accuse atheists of “railing against god”. I hold no faith in ‘god’, I do not absolutely claim non-existence, only that there is insufficient proof to sway me to follow such Bronze-age myths. I do not believe your claims of a ‘god’ to be valid, and as such… Continue

As I was relaxing on the couch last night watching some T.V. and reading the news online, it was just after dinner and the phone rang. Normally, if it is a number on the caller i.d. that I do not recognize, I can safely assume that it is some sort of telemarketer/pollster/charity. I am on the "Do Not Call" lists but every once in a while a solicitor squeaks through and I have to tell them they will be reported unless they remove me from their call logs. If it is a pollster, depending on what… Continue
