Science is doomed in the UK, Actual exam question...

The new qualifications watchdog for England has made its presence known with a damning report on the standards of general science and physics GCSEs, which it says require "immediate, firm action".

Below is a summary of its main concerns, with some illustrations of the "decline" it is concerned about.

MULTIPLE CHOICE

One of the main bones of contention for Ofqual is the prevalence of "objective testing" (multiple choice questions).

Creationism Museum Says Darwin Got Something Right

The Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A controversial Kentucky museum that trumpets the Bible story of creation and rejects evolution is making room for an odd guest: Charles Darwin.

A new exhibit at the Answers in Genesis Creation Museum argues that natural selection — Darwin's explanation for how species develop new traits over time — can coexist with the… Continue

Why do Athiests hate evangelical Christians? - A Christian's perspective. (bit of a read - but worth it.)

One of the first big splashes this blog made was when this post (2002!) made it into the atheist blogosphere. I got about a hundred notes from atheists saying “Thanks.” I’ve always agreed with what I wrote here, and I’ve always felt it was important. I also know that many culture-warring Christians will say this is a surrender document and I should join in the hatred of those who sometimes hate us. Check with Jesus on that one.

Here’s “Why Do They Hate Us?” from this… Continue

What Would You Do If You Only Had a Short Time to Live?

It’s hard, from within the storm of every day life, to see things with real perspective, to know what’s important and what’s simply pressing on our consciousness right now, demanding attention.

We have people emailing us for information and requesting action, we have phone calls and visitors and a long to-do list and a million chores and errands to run and all of the slings and arrows of our daily reality … and yet, what is… Continue

Task Ninja: Form the Action Habit

A lot of us get stuck in inaction –procrastinating, doing a lot of unimportant tasks to avoid the important stuff, worrying about failing or about being perfect, having a hard time starting, getting distracted, and so on.

It’s time to start forming the Action Habit instead.

And it’s really not that hard if you focus on it for a little while. Like any other habit, start in small doses, little tasks, just short bursts, and then… Continue

10 Ways to Beat the “Can’t Get No Satisfaction” Syndrome

Are you feeling like life isn’t exciting enough? That maybe you’re missing out on something because you just can’t get motivated for anything? Turns out you’re not alone.

“In a population of 6 billion+ people globally, it is hard not to feel like another number. I find life so disenchanting the more I pursue things I though were my dreams. I am at possibly the top university in the world getting my masters to make the world a… Continue

Why You Should Think About Encouraging Others to Be Brilliant

It is a beautiful thing to create, to produce, to go out there in the world and make a contribution.

But it is just as important, if not more so, that we help others to do the same — that we teach others to create and produce, that we encourage them, that we support them and help them to succeed.

Why? Why not just worry about our own creations and productions? What’s so important about helping others to succeed?

If… Continue
