Conflicting messages

Thanks to Facebook, I'm slightly irritated now. Of course the website is innocent, this is about a friend's post. We grew up in a tiny little town with hardcore Christian values. I escaped. She didn't. She posts Christian messages on her Facebook page every day. Today we were treated to this gem:

"The New Testament brings us right down to this one issue - if sin rules in me, God`s life in me will be killed; if God rules in me, sin in me will be killed. There is nothing more fundamental… Continue

Would you sign a pact with the devil?

I saw this blog post on Richard Wiseman's blog yesterday. Had a look around to see whether it was posted on TA, but didn't find anything, sorry if someone posted it and I missed it.

I signed it, no second thoughts. I find some of the comments quite stupid. Some people state they don't believe in the devil, but they won't participate, "just in case".

How do you feel about it?

Jenny McCarthy. Again!

On the one hand, we have peer-reviewed research indicating that diet has no effect on autism. On the other, we have Jenny McCarthy, actress and mother, who says hooey to science!

Jenny McCarthy Dismisses Pediatrics Study on Autism

This was my favourite part: McCarthy dismissed the latest scientific research as worthless, and the scientists who conduct… Continue

My favourite part of the "Atheism is the new fundamentalism" debate

If you haven't watched the debate, it is available here in a series of Youtube videos. Speaking for the motion was Richard Harries and Charles Moore, against it, A.C. Grayling and Richard Dawkins.

The two speaking for the motion were quite useless, while Grayling and Dawkins were eloquent, amusing and on point. At one stage I wondered to myself whether this could possibly… Continue

Jenny McCarthy spoiled my break.

Thank goodness for the internet. Only by ranting here, am I able to restrain myself from screaming in people's faces, waving my arms around like a crazy person.

Take today. I volunteer at a school for learners with autism (in South Africa, school-going pupils or students are called "learners"). During breaktime, while supervising the children, I chatted with two teacher's aides. We were talking about the best places to purchase books online. The one lady (who completed a psychology… Continue

A rare apple.

Story here.

"The fruit's striking colouring is thought to be caused by a random genetic mutation at odds of more than a million to one."

Or, God did… Continue

My meeting with a creationist - an anecdote.

I think I discovered a creationist the other day.

I was busy copying something and an acquaintance of mine approached the copier with her documents and we started chatting while I copied my pages. The conversation turned to evolutionary psychology, as it does, and I recounted an incident that took place during my first year at university. The lecturer had asked the class what evolution was and a kid replied "it says we came from monkeys" and the lecturer replied "that's right!"* I… Continue

Religion and your mental health.

Picture youself in bed, waiting to fall asleep, when suddenly you start seeing millions of stars falling right in front of you. You see a radiant light, one brighter than the rest, mingling with beautiful colours. You feel ecstatic. Everything appears to be shimmering and boiling and then, as suddenly as it came, it dissipates. Throughout all of this, you are fully awake. How would you react?

How about if you were sitting in a room with a group of people and the whole room became… Continue

My new reason for being an atheist.

A couple of years ago, I attended a concert organized by a friend. I was seated next to a lady in her thirties. She was quite chatty and readily told me about the run of bad luck that had befallen her, after I commented on her bandaged and swollen hand. Oh yes, she had burnt her hand on the pot while cooking. She continued to explain that it was really bad luck, because she had just recovered from an accident in which she rolled and wrecked her vehicle. She was also having trouble at work and… Continue
