More about Mormons– the saga continues

From Not My God

Good news, everyone! I just read about this and I’m so excited I nearly spat out my spicy tuna roll:

South Park Creators’ Mormon Musical Set for Off-Broadway

Free tickets might inspire me to shower the musical with lots of PR on this… Continue

It’s not persecution if it’s against Devil Worshippers

From Not My God

Not My God focuses on persecution and hatred of atheists. I’m not saying that I equate anti-atheism rhetoric with segregated bathrooms under Jim Crow laws or genocides. What I am trying to say is that many people in the US hate atheists, all else being equal. I’ve heard time and time again of people saying that they didn’t believe in God– without sarcasm, without “and neither should you,” without… Continue

Atheists who swing to the right

From Not My God

I don’t often hear from atheists who are politically/socially conservative. I know they’re out there, albeit probably much fewer than their more liberal counterparts. I’ve heard at least one atheist say that he’s a truck driver, voted for Bush twice, etc., and no one would guess that he’s an atheist. True, I wouldn’t have.

I’m a liberal myself, although it does disconcert me to a… Continue

You can't go to heaven!

From Not My God

I have missed this blog! Between winter holidays, Andy getting badly injured, planning a wedding and miscellaneous happenstances, I haven’t posted in a while, though I religiously (heh, heh) have posted every Thursday.

It’s no secret that I have big love for the HBO series Big Love, which I discussed in my posts about Mormonism. The opening credits end with Bill, the husband, meeting each… Continue

Catholic sex abuse survivor

From Not My God

Here in the Not My God penthouse, I focus on stories of atheists that are particularly difficult and moving for the purposes of illustration and because this obviously makes for a more interesting book. So if anyone out there thinks I cherry-pick the extremes, yes, I am, but that’s sort of the point.

I found this story on Dawkins’s Converts Corner.

“For many years I was a victim of… Continue

Kids Today

From Not My God

In my search for interviewees for Not My God (the book itself, not just this blog), I went for a diverse crowd, including a diverse group of ages. Kids/teenagers are particularly valuable. Yes, they are the future, all right, but growing up in the information age provides them with an enormous cohort effect. I’ve mentioned that they are more fortunate than I was in that I was all alone as a… Continue

Wow, it’s been almost a year

From Not My God

Here in the Not My God penthouse, I’ve realized that I’ve been doing this blog for almost a year. Praise Darwin! I’m acknowledging the milestone a little early since I’ll be in Germany meeting my new nephew soon and probably away from the blog.

I’ve certainly learned a lot about the subject matter and gotten a lot to think about through this book project. I conceived Not My God in the first place… Continue

Why I'm proud, dammit

From Not My God

Happy Blasphemy Day, everyone! Why celebrate blasphemy, you ask? It's important to put into to practice the concept that we shouldn't respect religion just because it's religion. It is not exempt from criticism the way so many people seem to think it is. Don't bow down to religion when it treads on you in the name of "respect." Respect has to be earned.

Speaking of blasphemy, it was great to see Dawkins… Continue

Eight years later

From Not My God

Tomorrow is the eighth anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in history. For many, the events of September Eleventh strengthened their belief in god– for some, in an angry, vengeful god, and for others, a kind, loving god. Others, still, wouldn’t retain their faith in the aftermath of the tragedy. Some of you may be among them.

It is probable that Richard Dawkins wrote the God Delusion and… Continue

As if being a teenager isn't hard enough

From Not My God blog

Aye gevalt-- Is it September already?

Thank Darwin for Facebook. It is proving invaluable in my meeting and schmoozing with other atheists/skeptics. Plus it's great for meeting cool people everywhere. To any young 'uns reading this, you have no idea how much the internet has changed things.

One thing I see a lot of in this project is atheists who have double, and sometimes even… Continue

From our friends outside the U.S

Not My God is about the experiences of atheists in America because the U.S. is in the unique position of being a staunchly religious nation in the developed world. It’s part of what makes America America: having a gun in one hand and a bible in the other. As a result, atheists have it a lot harder here than in, say, France or Japan.

I recently spoke with a Turkish man who told me that, contrary to what I thought, it was easier to be an atheist in Istanbul than in the U.S! I still… Continue

All about Mormons

For those of you who saw the South Park episode All About Mormons, you know how interesting the Mormon church can be. I’ve also read Jon Krakauer’s non-fiction book about extreme Mormonism, Under the Banner of Heaven, and more recently, been watching the HBO series Big Love. That show is so great. It’s about a closet polygamist — he’s not a Mormon extremist, just a quote-unquote regular Mormon who happens to have three wives.

So naturally I’m more interested in Mormons, or in the… Continue
