Tying up the loose ends

About six years ago, I attended the church I grew up in for the last time. I hadn't been there in several weeks, and questions were asked about where I had been and what I was up to. Mostly it was the pastor's wife, who had been a mentor to me, asking about what I had been doing. The tone she used made me think she knew I was in a "faith crisis" or whatever you want to call it. I made up a lie about attending another church closer to home and left it at that. I walked out the doors and never…

I'm an Atheist, Therefore I'm Weird?

My grandmother called tonight. It was a little bit of a surprise, but we (my parents and I) were glad to hear from her. My parents and Grandma talked about the weather and this and that. It was a totally normal conversation, and then Grandma started asking about me. Actually, the words that came from my 84-year-old grandma's mouth were, "What's with Kristi?"

My aunt, who is a born-again Christian (like pretty much the rest of my dad's side of the family) has been closely monitoring my… Continue

"Just Curious"

Some of you may remember that I received a Facebook message from a Christian friend of mine awhile back, wherein she took it upon herself to tell me how much God loves me and all that. I responded to her in kind, explaining as nicely as I could why I no longer believe. I never got a response from her after that.

Tonight, I received a message from a cousin. She was raised Catholic and although I don't think she really practices anymore, she…

Letter to a Christian Friend

Today I received a message on Facebook from a friend that I knew in YWAM (she's French, so her English isn't perfect):

Girl !!! I've been thinking of you lately? How are you?? I remembered clearly the day in india when we preached and you found the courage to share what happened to you and how God was restoring you. I admired so much what you did that day !!! I've seen on your status that you were not so crazy about all of this anymore. And i wanted to share with you that… Continue

I'm Out!

New Year's Eve, I was at home getting ready to go out and my mom was watching a Lifetime movie on TV. The movie was about a Christian mother and her homosexual son and the mother's struggles to try to "cure" her son against his wishes. During the movie, I told my mom, "Movies like this make me wonder how you and Dad would react if [my sister] Kim or I were to come out as homosexual, or if we changed our religion or something." She responded, "Well, you basically did. You never go to church… Continue

My Aunt's Crusade, Part II

As discussed in my previous blog, the books my aunt promised to send arrived today. She sent me Josh McDowell's The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict and Answers to Tough Questions Skeptics Ask About the Christian Faith. I have just over three weeks off from college for the holidays and I hope to have the books read within that time. I will also be posting my thoughts, questions, and interesting quotes from the books on here for your entertainment.

Thanks to everyone… Continue

My aunt's crusade

I have been very open about being an atheist on Facebook and Twitter. I'm rather open about it in real life too, except to my parents. My dad's family is fairly religious and my aunt, who has seen all of my posts on atheism, has taken it upon herself to bring me back to God.

For those who don't know, I was raised Christian and was very involved in the church, to the point of being a missionary in India for a short time. After returning from the mission, I began to question my faith… Continue
