I've come to a conclusion. Far too many atheists are far too willing to just accept the prejudices of religious people as being "their right" and far to unwilling to step up and call bullshit on obvious prejudice and bigotry.
This stems from an argument I had with my girlfriend last night, well not so much a true argument really. Let's call it a heated discussion. Let me give you some background, she is currently attending college online at the University of Phoenix. One of her… Continue

Spewing creationist nonsense to children wasn't enough. Teaching that non-science, who's core tenants of faith and ignoring evidence go against everything science stands in science classes in public, government-funded schools just wasn't enough for the fundamentalist quacks in this country. Texas public schools are now required by law to teach the Bible.
Beginning this school year a… Continue

While not in any way directly related to atheism, I felt this was good enough to justify a blog post and not just a forum discussion. For those of you who missed it, last night on Countdown with Keith Olbermann there was one of Keith's occasional "Special Comment" segments, this one regarding the now-stumbling efforts for health care reform in the United States. To call Olbermann's comments "blistering" would be quite an understatement. I'm a big fan of Countdown and make sure to watch whenever… Continue

Over the weekend I began reading Jeff Sharlat's "The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power." I'm quickly finding out that not only is the media in America spending WAY too little time on this C Street "church" for conservative Christian politicians. They're ignoring the important part of the story.
Forget the scandalous affairs of which so many of it's members are guilty. They are of little importance in the grand scheme of… Continue

I must once again thank Hemant Mehta over at The Friendly Atheist
for calling this to attention. If you live in the United States at all and ESPECIALLY Illinois, you need to know about this. In Illinois' recently signed $31 Billion Capital Bill, there is over $11 Million earmarked specifically for religious projects. Yeah, you read that right $11 Million
in tax payer dollars set aside for institutions that don't even pay taxes.… Continue

This is taken from The Friendly Atheist
which, by the way, is one of the best Atheist blogs on the web so if you don't already read it, you should start. Great story that spits right in the face of the whole "without religion, people would have no morals" BS we hear from theists so often. Here's a link to the post.

Hello everyone, it's been quite a while. Stupid real life infringing on my blogging and video gaming time. Grrr.
Anyway, things have finally begun to slow down again at work and home and I'm hoping to be able to get back to blogging more regularly here on T|A as it's been an excellent release for me since I found the site. The topic of my first blog in my return is a question (or rather two variations of a question) that I get asked quite a bit both online and off. If you haven't… Continue

Every now and then I like to drift away from my usual topic of the evils of religion and touch on important political events. Well, it seems the time has certainly come to step away from talk of religion once again. I've said again and again that the importance of what is happening in Iran right now simply can not be overstated. It is likely to be viewed as one of the most important events of this generation for many reasons. I'd like to take a moment to discuss exactly why I feel these events… Continue

Even though I disagree with him on just about everything, I have a great deal of respect for Andrew Sullivan. He's religious, conservative, and Republican - 3 things I normally can not stand. However he manages to be all 3 without being at the same time hard-headed, bigoted, or unwilling to listen to opposing views - a true rarity amongst his brethren. If all theists displayed the type of eloquence and willingness to accept that different people have different views and that doesn't necessarily… Continue

German bones to reveal evolution's 'missing link'
A FOSSILISED skeleton that may be a vital missing link in human evolution will be revealed in a BBC documentary.
The 90-minute program, to be presented by Sir David Attenborough, is top-secret.
But sources in the US say the research on which it is… Continue

Seeing this issue come up on Real Time with Bill Maher last Friday first sparked my interest. It sparked it enough that I decided to go on a hunt for more information to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes, so to speak. Sad to say, it goes tremendously deep indeed and I thank Bill for calling this to people's attention. It is indeed a shocking situation and if you haven't paid it any attention before, I suggest you start now for this may pose the biggest threat to our national security and… Continue

A recent survey of 742 Americans by the Pew Research Center has turned up some not-so-surprising results. The more often you go to church - the more likely you are to support torture. Imagine that.
The question was: "Do you think the use of torture against suspected terrorists in order to gain important information can often be justified, sometimes be justified, rarely be justified, or never be justified?"
Over half the people who attend church at least once a week - 54%… Continue

So the other day I got into a debate with one of my coworkers that was fairly interesting and left me kind of wondering myself. I make no attempt to hide my nonbelief, most people in my office know that I'm fiercely atheist. Even those that make every attempt to convert whoever they can tend to leave me alone bacause I'm also known as a fiercely effective debator. There have been a few situations where someone attempting to convert me wound up getting converted themselves. Most theists don't… Continue

(CNN) — Newt Gingrich said Tuesday the Obama administration is "intensely secular" and "anti-religious," the former House Speaker's second hard-hitting criticism of the new administration this week.
In an interview with FOX News, Gingrich said he strongly disagreed with Obama's choice of Harry Knox — an outspoken activist for gay rights — to the White House advisory council on faith-based initiatives.
"I think their goal is to have a very secular America in which… Continue

Figured I'd might as well continue my recent trend of posting articles about the fight for equal rights for gay couples in the United States. Well, it's time to update the tally - 4 down, 46 to go.
Vermont Lawmakers Legalize Gay Marriage
Another first in the Gay Marriage fight as Vermont became the first state to legalize gay marriage via the legislative branch rather than the Judicial branch. The… Continue

Well, at least Americans can say our religious nutjob government representatives aren't as crazy as THEIR religious nutjob government representatives. New Legislation set to pass in Afghanistan to "give the Sunni minority their own identity" sends Afghan women back to the Taliban days. They will not be allowed to leave their home without the permission of a male relative and men are permitted to rape their wives. Way to go Islam, keep up the good work proving to the world that your belief… Continue

"Whether expressly or impliedly, much of society rejects same-sex marriage due to sincere, deeply ingrained — even fundamental — religious belief," the court said, before adding that religious views are nonetheless mixed on the subject. "As a result, civil marriage must be judged under our constitutional standards of equal protection and not under religious doctrines or the religious views of individuals. This approach does not disrespect or denigrate the religious views of many… Continue

A victory for tolerance and separation of church and state, Iowa is now the 3rd state where Gay marriage is legal.
(DES MOINES, Iowa) — The Iowa Supreme Court says the state's same-sex marriage ban violates the constitutional rights of gay and lesbian couples, making it the third state where gay marriage is legal.
In a unanimous ruling issued Friday, the court upheld a 2007 Polk County District Court… Continue

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
*NO* law respecting an establishment of religion. It seems pretty black and white to me, no law shall be created on the grounds of religious belief. Yet here we are 200 years later still fighting against it every day one multiple fronts. Abortion and contraceptives, assisted suicide, life support, gay rights - indeed despite this 200 year old rule of the… Continue
