Do We Have Free Will?

The question of whether or not free will exists is something that I find fascinating. It is commonly believed that humans do have free will, but is such belief justified? As humans, we are hardwired to have the perception that we have free will. Asking whether or not free will exists is really all about our perceptions and experiences and asking whether or not they are accurate representations of reality. Therefore, we cannot use our perceptions or experiences as evidence for or against free…

Why should I respect religious belief?

I put this on my blogspot page awhile ago, but forgot to post it here.

Here in America, lots of religious people like to promote their religious beliefs. Personally, I'm fine with this, seeing as I am not very shy about my atheism. However, just because I respect their right to promote their beliefs, it does not mean that I should necessarily respect the beliefs themselves. Religious people love to show that…

College Student Debunks Homeopathy!

Of all the forms of alternative medicine, homeopathy seems to take the cake as the most irrational and logic defying. The primary principle of homeopathy is that heavily diluting a substance in water makes the active ingredient more potent. Homeopathic "medicine" is really just very expensive water. Here is an experiment that I thought of that tests the validity of the principles of homeopathy. It can be performed at your average college party. Pour a few shots of vodka or other hard liquor…

Examining the Wedge: Is Intelligent Design Actually Science?

This was an essay for my college English class.

The origins of life have been debated and discussed for millennia. Ancient cultures, such as the Greeks, had their creation myths. Modern religion still supports using mythology based on a literal interpretation of scripture as a valid explanation for how life came to be. For the last one hundred and fifty years, the scientific community has supported evolution as the best explanation of how life came to be. However, there has been… Continue

Faith vs Skepticism

I’ve always been curious about what people believe, why they believe them, and the rationale or factual validity of their beliefs. What I have noticed is that there are two spectrums of attaining belief, faith and skepticism, which happen to be opposites of each other. Simply put, faith is belief without evidence or question and skepticism is to ask for evidence or to question the validity of a belief before accepting the belief. Faith has a simple problem. It can’t be tested, confirmed, or… Continue

Mysterious Ways

I’d like to start off by saying that this is not an attack on religion or the religious, but merely just an attack on a simple-minded phrase commonly used by religious folks. We have all heard them say it, “God works in mysterious ways,” but what does it mean? What does it say about the individual who utters this phrase? Is this phrase a decent answer, or is it merely a cop out to cover ignorance and intellectual laziness? If there is anything that this phrase does not do is promote an… Continue

Viva La Evolution

This was an essay that I wrote for my English class during my senior year in high school.

Education, by definition, is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life (Dictionary.com). Science is a major part of an individual’s education in a modern school. Evolution is an important part of science that should not be overlooked or ignored. So why… Continue
