QWERTY Spells God

The QWERTY keyboard was designed by a man (C. Latham Sholes to be specific). I could stop there and say that so was God and that would do. But that actually wasn't my point. But it IS a good one!!

The arms of the old typewriters had an annoying tendency to jam. If you typed too fast or used letters that were too close to each other they would clash with each other. This was a major stumbling block for the typewriter. In… Continue

Religion is like a Football Team

I support Chelsea and my Mecca is Stamford Bridge. I made my pilgrimage when I lived in London and it was the site of much adoration.

Each week, all over the world, people go to these sites and chant, sing, stand up, sit down, praise and denouce as a group. After the 'ceremony' they will discuss the events of the day and what needs to be done to make things better for their chosen idols.

When confronted with a member of another faction, who believes they follow the… Continue

Open and Fair Debate (& Alternative Medicine)

Last night I was on Twitter and I had a very interesting converstaion with a fellow twitterer. I won't give that persons name as it is irrelevant to this blog but I will post the tweets here.

The conversation annoyed and bothered me because although I felt I was being fair and open, but was voicing a differing opinion (against Alternative Medicine), I received agressive responses and was mocked by this other person (who I will call XYZ from this point on for simplicity) because I… Continue

Dan Ariely on our buggy moral code

http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/dan_ariely_on_our_buggy_moral_code.html

In this Dan goes through reasons why we might cheat and what influences how much we cheat.

2 things struck me about it.

1) The 10 Commantments had the same effect as a fictitious Honour code. Which suggests that we will honour an external moral guideline, but it does not need to be divine to be valued.

2) The fudge factor he spoke of was the amound of dissonance beween what you… Continue

Too Cool For School

Why is it that using your brain has become a thing to be embarassed about? What is wrong with people showing intelligence and expressing intellectual points of view?

I have noticed a lot that if you shift a conversation away from the normal everyday stuff, last nights game, the latest soap news, celebrity, which are all very entertaing topics (I hope Chelsea beat ManU today!!!) that you get castigated and called a nerd, smart arse, or know-it-all.

I read a lot of… Continue

Definition of Atheist

There is something about the "I don't believe in God" definition of atheist that bothers me. Now maybe I am being too pedantic but doesn't that definition in some way implies there IS a God and I am just not believeing in it and that I am being stubborn?

I usually tell people I am an atheist because I believe there is NO God. I say as a skeptic and rational thinker, although I cannot say categorically that there actually is 100% NO God (as you can never prove the non-existance of… Continue

1st Entry

Just found this site via twitter and Sophies pic of a baby atheist dragon (so thanks Sophie).

I am an atheist and I have been for some time. I am a rational person and I find it very hard to discuss religion with people as I find myself dealing with agressive people. I try not to be confrontational or agressive myself but I often wonder are people getting angry with me as I represent their doubts and fears.

Do that see in me what they deep down know to be true.
