When it comes to its education standards, Texas has had a lot of bad luck these last few years.
Whether they were contending with a willfully ignorant dentist whom Texas Governor Rick Perry somehow thought was qualified to chair the State Board of Education (SBoE) and who… Continue

I'm a fellow who has moderate leaning tendencies in most things. I try to find the common ground and an equitable solution.
But I look at such works by the Discovery Institute, David Barton's "Wall Builders", The Texas School Board...
and I see no common ground. I see an enemy that seeks the annihilation of any opposing thought. An enemy that wishes to do great and deliberate harm to the American people for one purpose only; the pursuit of further power and wealth at the… Continue

Today, the Texas State Board of Education voted on curriculum standards of social studies for the Texan public school system. As I am sure most of you are aware, these standards will affect many other states as publishers will often tailor textbooks specifically to meet Texan requirements. This vote followed several days of debate as final amendments were proposed.
Cynthia Dunbar, one of the strongest voices for the SBOE's conservative voting block, decided that a nice, long… Continue

According to Amnesty International USA
, the state of Texas is set to execute someone after the jury consulted the bible during deliberations in deciding in favor of execution.
From the story:
One juror had read aloud from the Bible to a group of fellow jurors, including the passage, "And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer… Continue

For those of you who may not know, I'm acting as co-director for Camp Quest Texas 2010. We've roughly figured out how much we think we'll need to raise to run Camp Quest Texas...quite a bit; I'll post the official goal once we have it ironed out. So, we are in need of fund raising ideas that will bring in money; bake sales are okay but we need something bigger. Do you know of any companies which might want to sponsor Camp Quest Texas? We are also throwing around the idea of trying to get one of… Continue

Spewing creationist nonsense to children wasn't enough. Teaching that non-science, who's core tenants of faith and ignoring evidence go against everything science stands in science classes in public, government-funded schools just wasn't enough for the fundamentalist quacks in this country. Texas public schools are now required by law to teach the Bible.
Beginning this school year a… Continue

1 Timothy 2:9
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
Dyker Neyland believes that "women adorn themselves in modest apparel" means that her 7-year-old daughter Javé should not be required to tuck-in her shirt. Her reasoning: "I don't want her behind showing," Dyker said. "I don't want her body being exposed."
Apparently the part… Continue

Texas has played host to a lot of recent tomfoolery. Shenanigans linked to and summarized below.
Texas' moment-of-silence law upheld by appeals court panel
The Texas law that requires public school students to observe a daily minute of silence is constitutional because it expressly allows any silent use of that minute, whether religious or not, a three-judge panel of the 5th… Continue

In Texas, a teacher has just been suspended for being an atheist and a liberal. Just one more reason why we unbelievers need to step up our presence in America. The link to the article is below:

Last fall I went on a "LifeCrest VisionQuest"
, which included a stop-over in Groom, TX.
Here, some "fellow travelers" (although far more faithful than I) asked me to take their picture in front of the 20-story cross at the foot of the stairs. I said, "Only if I can video tape it and post it on YouTube." They said,… Continue
