7 Year-Old Cousin's Mom Died Unexpectedly

Yesterday, we got news that my (ex) Aunt died unexpectedly. She was undergoing radiation for cancer and started feeling poorly. They took her to the hospital and within a few hours she was dead. They're not 100% certain of what killed her but doctors think it may have been a blood clot. She was in her 30s.

She is survived by a small, close-knit family, her ex-husband (my biological uncle), and my 7 year old cousin. Although divorced, my Uncle was still in love with her, so he is…

My Father and his Faith

I've been thinking lately about moving back home. I will be there soon after eight years and thousands of miles of being away. My father the other day on the phone said that we needed to have a “long talk” when I get back. He never referred to what it was that he needed to talk about, but it's got me thinking about what it could be. At this point, it could be a lot of things, so I've tried to keep myself from speculating. My father, for those of you who don't…

The type of Mother I want to be.

I've been an atheist for 10+ years now, most of my family still thinks it's a phase. This doesn't bother me, whatever helps them sleep at night. My mom is the only person who believes it, she said "I'm not happy with it, but I would be a bad mom to try and see you for anything you are not." this made me so happy. I was about 19 when she said this, and it came after I spent a weekend babysitting my youngest cousin. That weekend was when I figured out the type of mom I wanted to…

Out of the Mouths of Babes

My four-year-old is in a Christian Montessori preschool. I had concerns about this choice of school, but having met the staff and talked to them about their approach to religion, agreed to it. They don't do indoctrination; they talk about the parables of Jesus and try to draw out the kids on what they think they mean. Also, the school has a wonderful approach to conflict resolution: seeing a 10-year old boy bring a "peace rose" to a classmate almost brought tears to my eyes when I thought…

What happens when we die?

A few months ago, my mother's dog died.  He was 16 years old, blind, senile, and incontinent with such bad arthritis that some days he couldn't walk, so as an adult looking at the situation, I was comforted by the fact that he wasn't suffering anymore.

My four year old daughter, however, was not.

"What's going to happen to him?" she asked me as we were at the emergency veterinary clinic (he just happened to take his turn for the worst while my mother was on vacation and I…

A Tidbit about My 3-year old.

I love watching my kid grow. She's learning more and more each day and her imagination just amazes me. She has recently been wanting to learn about Earth and other planets. We look up at the stars at night and I try to explain how far away each star really is. I've also bought several science-themed booked for her and she loves them!

As she's been learning about about the Universe, she has began to create her own version of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." She now… Continue

A parenting quandry I'd like feedback about

My 9-year-old daughter would like to spend a month this summer visiting her cousins in Texas. Her cousins are the children of my ex-wife's sister. She and her husband run an evangelical Christian youth ministry from their very large home. In addition to their 4 children, they have adopted at least 2 more (I've lost count), and usually have 10-15 other preteens and teens on site most days as part of their mentoring program. Their project is to prepare misfit teens to become better…

Boys names

I just found out I'm having another boy. I have a one year old named Xander, which I got from a show on adult swim. I want a name that's creative but not too weird. The only name I can think of that I really like is Holden and my boyfriend doesn't like it.

The lists online are terrible. They give me thousands of names and most of them I can't even figure out how to pronounce. So, I know this has nothing to do with atheism, science or anything else relevant but I'd appreciate suggestions.… Continue

Looking for some advice on parenting

Here is my situation, I am divorced and the mother of my three year old is very religious. She knows my stance on religion and is okay with it but doesn't want me to teach our son my world view. I don't think what she asks is fair. I told her that I wouldn't directly teach him anything but would answer any questions he might ask. He is extremely intelligent and my main goal in life is to teach him how to think for himself. I don't want him to believe what I believe or what his mother believes… Continue

Teacher Suspended - Homosexuality In Animals Assignment

Finally, the verdict comes out after about 8 hours of waiting.

Dan DeLong, the teacher that was suspended for assigning an optional article dealing with homosexuality in the animal kingdom, has his job back. The entire meeting that decided this was held behind closed doors while a reported 200 people stood outside in support of him.

I read the article that he assigned as optional material and there were some mildly graphic descriptions (if you call mentioning an ejaculation… Continue
