The Old Chestnut - Free Will

One of the biggest questions we atheists usually have about religion, and Christianity specifically is "If your god is a benevolent god, why does he let us commit terrible acts, acts that many Christians would call 'evil'?"

Their answer is usually that "God gave us free will" and that it is our fault for choosing to sin (such as Adam and Eve eating the apple). I think this is a cop out answer, as most things like free will and justice are human constructs, concepts that work in our… Continue

Truth: still scarier than fiction

I suppose I've never really written about this before, because it seems like too obvious a point to need addressing. But people do keep making these same tired old arguments, displaying a very tedious lack of imagination or intellectual curiosity.

Dear God

Dear God,

Jesus taught us not to keep treasure on Earth, but to keep it in Heaven. This is indeed what I have done for many, many years. I hope the treasure kept in Heaven is compounding at a marvelous rate of return.

Please God, let me withdraw the dividends to pay for all the bills. As you know, living without any earthly treasure is very difficult at the moment. Do transfer the dividends to my earthly bank account as soon as possible, and as much as… Continue

Stretching your Beliefs

It seems that people who believe in some kind of god, any kind of god, even ones they’ve created for themselves, are more acceptable than those that do not.

I was chatting with a lady I met last Sunday at Massimo Pigliucci’s presentation. She told me she held a belief in the supernatural, though not one that aligned with mainstream religion, and seemed offended by the idea that I didn’t believe in any sort of deity or supernatural hocus-pocus whatsoever.

You don’t believe… Continue

Capitalization

I was flipping through my 2005 Associated Press Stylebook to check the correct capitalization of a word when I noticed the following:

agnostic, atheist An agnostic is a person who believes it is impossible to know whether there is a God.

An atheist is a person who believes there is no God.
I immediately wondered why the Associated Press capitalized God in that entry, so I checked.

gods and…

Prayer Chain

I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter if what you're saying makes sense.

Example #1: One evening I was watching Extreme Home Make Over. (I know, bad idea.) An entire city was devastated by a horrible tornado. One part of the show centered around this old woman whose house had been completely demolished but the heart warming part was that God spared her rose garden. Really? That line of thinking seems a little backwards to me. Ok, so God was like, "I need to destroy this… Continue

Dear people of differnt faiths.

Dear people of different faiths.

You are all apparently going to hell or where ever it is you believe the bad guys go.

According to the Christians if you don't follow the bible you will go to hell, according to Islam if you don't follow the Qur’an you will go to Jahannam; Jehovah's witnesses believe that if you are not a Jehovah's witness you will not gain entry to paradise therefore ceasing to be.

All religions believe in different ways of getting to 'Heaven'… Continue

Dear God

Let me precede this post by saying...logic doesn't seem to work...so perhaps their heartstrings need to be tugged? Lol. Nope...it doesn't work either.

Dear God,

I know your really busy. That must be why you haven’t answered my prayers. I pray to you every night hoping that everything will turn out all right. So I’m writing you a letter, what’s the address to Heaven? I just want you to know that Mommy’s really sick. I try to be strong…but she isn’t getting any better.… Continue

Have A Little Faith

You tell me to have a little faith.

you tell me of a force above, who will keep me "safe".

You tell me to blindly follow.

A God, who is such a hypocrite.

God. He causes all the wars.

He does not keep one safe.

And yet you expect me to believe…

Do you really think your prayers are being answered

when you reach out to him each night?

The evils in this world simply could not exist if said god did.

He wouldn't allow pedophiles to… Continue

Audio Book Review: "Letting Go of God" by Julia Sweeney

I saw this CD set at a book store a while back for over $20. It caught my eye, but didn't seem like it would be worth the price. But when I saw it for way cheaper on iTunes, I decided to give it a go.

Sweeney's background is typical is some ways. She was given a very strong religious upbringing. Although she sees the hypocrisy behind the rules of her faith as a child, she still believes in god. This illustrates the mental pounding her parents gave her, in an effort to "instill… Continue

Changing the understading of Atheism

I keep a lot of very religious friends around because I really enjoy debating topics. As a scientist, I feel it helps keep the mind sharp and lucid regarding understanding the world around us. However, I am always puzzled by other scientists who are religious, very active and strongly religious or even mildly. I feel this world view is untenable, and does not match with the ideas of science, scientific process or a functional and pragmatic way of viewing the world or interacting with the… Continue

False Choices, or, How to Win Lawsuits and Marginalize People

[From Bloc Raisonneur]

I am interested in the Christian Broadcasting Network's take on the Newdow Pledge suit, because even though they will have a naturally built-in bias, they are a significant player in terms of niche media, and their political reporting… Continue

"Under God" and Compulsory Unity

[From Bloc Raisonneur]

Radley Balko at the Agitator and Jason Kuznicki at Positive Liberty wonder at the wisdom of Michael Newdow and other atheists' attempts to strike "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. Their beef? Per Balko:

Seems to me that the real problem here—whether you’re atheist, agnostic, or devout—is the idea that we’re forcing school…

How one Bible story (NOAHS ARK) proves the Bible is full of crap.. and why the heck is it so popular among kids?

While often thought of as a "Children's Story", this is far from it. Loaded with contradictions to what we have been told about God, this story raises some interesting questions.

Warning – this view might disturb some readers, but please read the full article to understand to context of the points being made before jumping to conclusion.

The well known story of Noah's Ark is often listed as a favorite, and often considered as… Continue
